Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute comprehensive horticultural management plans, including planting schedules, soil health programs, irrigation strategies, and advanced fertilization for all managed grounds and interior plantscapes.
  • Direct, supervise, and mentor a diverse team of horticulturists, gardeners, arborists, and groundskeepers, managing recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and daily work assignments to foster a culture of excellence and safety.
  • Create and manage the annual horticulture department budget, overseeing the procurement of all necessary plants, seeds, soil amendments, tools, and equipment while ensuring fiscal responsibility and resource optimization.
  • Lead the design, installation, and meticulous maintenance of dynamic seasonal floral displays, perennial borders, turf areas, woody plant collections, and permanent landscape features to ensure year-round visual appeal and ecological function.
  • Champion and implement robust Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, emphasizing biological controls and sustainable practices to minimize chemical use and promote a healthy, balanced ecosystem.
  • Oversee all aspects of plant health care, including disease diagnosis, pest identification, and the application of appropriate treatments and preventative measures across the property.
  • Manage nursery and greenhouse operations, including plant propagation, cultivation of specialty crops, and growing plant material for landscape installations and seasonal displays.
  • Develop and enforce safety protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all horticultural activities, including equipment operation, chemical handling, and pruning.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to assess plant health, identify maintenance needs, and ensure all horticultural standards for quality and aesthetics are consistently met or exceeded.
  • Collaborate with landscape architects, designers, and contractors on capital improvement projects, providing expert horticultural guidance from the planning phase through to installation and long-term care.
  • Maintain meticulous records of plant collections, including accessioning, labeling, and inventory management, often utilizing specialized database software.
  • Manage and optimize complex irrigation systems to ensure efficient water usage, making adjustments based on weather patterns, plant needs, and conservation goals.
  • Plan and oversee advanced arboricultural work, including structural pruning, hazard tree assessment, and removal/replacement programs to ensure the health and safety of the tree canopy.
  • Develop long-term strategic plans for the landscape, focusing on sustainability, biodiversity, and the evolution of the plant collections in line with the organization's mission.
  • Research, trial, and introduce new plant species and cultivars appropriate for the local climate and site conditions to enhance the diversity and resilience of the landscape.
  • Ensure all grounds and landscapes are maintained in a state of readiness for public visitation, private events, and daily operations.
  • Oversee turf management programs, including aeration, overseeding, fertilization, and mowing schedules to maintain healthy, high-quality lawn areas.
  • Manage composting and green waste recycling programs to reduce waste and create valuable soil amendments for use on-site.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on departmental activities, project progress, budget performance, and key metrics to senior leadership.
  • Serve as the primary horticultural expert for the organization, providing information and guidance to other departments, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Coordinate snow and ice removal operations during winter months to ensure safe access to facilities and prevent damage to plant material.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in developing and implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies and sustainable, organic horticultural practices.
