Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive landscape maintenance duties, including mowing, edging, blowing, and trimming, to uphold pristine aesthetic standards across all managed properties.
  • Execute seasonal planting schedules for annuals, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and trees, ensuring correct placement, depth, and soil preparation according to landscape designs.
  • Implement integrated pest management (IPM) strategies by identifying and diagnosing plant pests, diseases, and nutritional deficiencies, and applying appropriate organic or chemical treatments.
  • Conduct meticulous pruning, shearing, and shaping of trees, shrubs, and hedges to promote healthy growth, structural integrity, and desired ornamental form.
  • Prepare and amend soil for planting beds and turf areas using compost, fertilizers, and other organic matter to create optimal growing conditions.
  • Apply mulches to garden beds to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Cultivate and maintain specialized plant collections in gardens, greenhouses, or nurseries, including propagation through seeds, cuttings, and division.
  • Systematically remove weeds from planting beds, lawns, and hardscapes using manual, mechanical, or chemical methods in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ensure the health of turf areas through regular aeration, overseeding, topdressing, and targeted fertilization programs.
  • Safely mix and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in accordance with manufacturer instructions, company policies, and government regulations.
  • Perform seasonal cleanup tasks, such as leaf removal in the fall and storm debris cleanup, to maintain a safe and tidy environment.
  • Pot and re-pot plants, container gardens, and nursery stock as needed to accommodate growth and maintain plant health.
  • Participate in landscape construction and installation projects, including the installation of softscapes (plants) and hardscapes (pathways, retaining walls).
  • Identify and remove invasive plant species to protect native ecosystems and maintain the integrity of landscape designs.
  • Harvest flowers, fruits, and vegetables from production gardens, ensuring proper handling and post-harvest care.

Secondary Functions

  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on a wide range of horticultural equipment, including commercial mowers, tractors, tillers, and chainsaws, ensuring operational safety and longevity.
  • Manage and monitor irrigation systems, performing repairs, adjustments, and seasonal startups/shutdowns to ensure efficient water distribution and conservation.
  • Maintain detailed records of horticultural activities, including planting dates, fertilization schedules, pesticide applications, and plant inventories.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, tool sheds, and equipment storage facilities to promote a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling machinery and chemicals.
  • Collaborate with designers and supervisors to provide feedback on plant performance and suggest improvements for future landscape plans.
  • Assist in greenhouse operations by regulating temperature and humidity, watering, and managing nursery stock from propagation to sale or installation.
  • Provide care for interior plantscapes, ensuring proper watering, lighting, and pest control for indoor foliage.

  • Plant Identification: Strong knowledge of regional plant species, including their common and botanical names, and growth habits.
  • Pruning Techniques: Proficiency in proper pruning methods for a variety of trees, shrubs, and perennials to enhance health and aesthetics.
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Ability to identify common pests and diseases and apply appropriate, environmentally-sensitive control measures.
  • Landscape Equipment Operation: Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
