- Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and other clinical teams to clarify orders, escalate critical or unexpected results, and provide guidance on specimen collection requirements and test limitations.
- Troubleshoot pre-analytical issues such as hemolysis, clotted specimens, incorrect labeling, and inadequate sample volume, provide corrective action (recollection instructions) and document incidents in incident reporting systems.
- Train, mentor, and provide on-the-job instruction for new laboratory hires, students, and float staff on proper specimen collection, instrument operation, and lab safety procedures while contributing to competency assessments.
- Participate in laboratory process improvement initiatives, Lean/Kaizen activities, and workflow optimization projects to improve efficiency, reduce errors, and improve patient experience in the specimen collection and testing process.
- Maintain accurate and timely laboratory documentation including QC logs, maintenance records, reagent lot logs, corrective action records, and daily shift checklists necessary for regulatory readiness.
- Support molecular testing workflows as assigned (PCR sample prep, nucleic acid extraction, and routine molecular assays) while following contamination control measures and validated SOPs when trained and authorized.
- Respond to and document post-analytic inquiries from clinical teams, providing result interpretation context, method limitations, and follow-up testing recommendations in collaboration with senior laboratory staff or pathologists.
- Participate in after-hours call rotations, night shift coverage, or on-call support for critical testing needs, ensuring continuity of laboratory services in the hospital setting.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in maintaining laboratory information system (LIS) test definitions, order sets, and result comments, and collaborate with informatics to improve interfaces between analyzers and the EHR.
- Provide input to the laboratory leadership on inventory forecasting, capital equipment requests, and analyzer replacement planning based on daily workload and quality metrics.
- Participate in hospital infection control committees and safety drills, contributing laboratory perspective to institutional emergency preparedness and blood-borne pathogen policies.
- Support validation and verification of new assays, instruments, and point-of-care programs by collecting validation data, performing parallel testing, and documenting results for regulatory submission.
- Help develop and update SOPs, competency checklists, and training materials to ensure consistent practice across shifts and to support cross-coverage during staff absences.
- Engage in vendor management by coordinating service calls, accepting and verifying service reports, and ensuring timely follow-up on instrument repairs to minimize downtime.
- Promote patient-centered service by providing courteous specimen collection experiences, explaining procedures to patients, and addressing patient concerns in collaboration with nursing and clinical staff.
