Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely and efficiently transport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from various departments, including radiology, physical therapy, and operating rooms, ensuring patient comfort and dignity.
Assist clinical staff, such as nurses and technicians, with lifting, turning, and repositioning patients in bed to prevent pressure sores, enhance comfort, and facilitate medical procedures.
Respond promptly and courteously to patient call lights and nursing staff requests for non-clinical assistance, such as adjusting beds, providing extra blankets, or fetching water.
Provide direct one-on-one observation (sitter duties) for patients who are at risk of falls, confusion, or self-harm, ensuring their continuous safety and providing companionship.
Assist with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes by preparing rooms, transporting patients, and moving their personal belongings with care.
Observe patient conditions during transport and report any noticeable changes, distress, or concerns immediately to the appropriate nursing or medical personnel.
Transport deceased patients to the hospital morgue with the utmost respect, discretion, and strict adherence to established hospital policies and procedures.
Provide compassionate support and basic comfort measures to patients and their families, offering a reassuring and helpful presence during what can be a stressful time.

Secondary Functions

Collect, sort, and transport soiled linen, general waste, and biohazardous materials to designated disposal areas, following all safety and infection control guidelines.
Maintain, clean, and disinfect patient transport equipment, including wheelchairs, gurneys, and stretchers, according to strict infection control protocols to prevent cross-contamination.
Ensure patient rooms, hallways, and common areas are kept clean, tidy, and free of obstacles to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Manage the distribution and inventory of medical gas cylinders (e.g., oxygen tanks), ensuring they are safely transported, stored, and replaced as needed.
Collect and deliver patient specimens, medical records, charts, and prescriptions between laboratories, pharmacies, and nursing stations in a timely and confidential manner.
Distribute and set up patient meal trays, assist patients with opening containers if needed, and collect used trays after meals.
Monitor inventory levels of departmental supplies such as linens, gowns, and personal protective equipment (PPE), and initiate restocking procedures to ensure continuous availability.
Perform minor cleaning tasks as needed, such as mopping up spills and sanitizing high-touch surfaces, to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.
Operate hospital communication systems, including pagers, two-way radios, and digital dispatch systems, to coordinate transport and other support activities effectively.
