Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and compassionately transport patients by wheelchair, trolley, or bed between wards, operating theatres, diagnostic imaging units (X-ray, MRI), and other clinical departments, ensuring patient comfort and dignity at all times.
  • Transfer deceased patients from wards and other areas to the mortuary, performing this duty with the utmost respect, sensitivity, and adherence to hospital protocols.
  • Collect and deliver patient charts, medical records, internal mail, and other confidential documents across various hospital sites, maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Transport blood products, pathology specimens, and laboratory samples between wards, clinics, and laboratories in a timely and secure manner, following all handling and safety guidelines.
  • Respond promptly to emergency calls, such as for the Cardiac Arrest team, by transporting critical equipment and personnel to the required location without delay.
  • Manage the hospital's medical gas cylinders (e.g., oxygen, nitrous oxide), including transportation, connection/disconnection, storage, and maintaining stock levels on wards.
  • Move and set up medical equipment, furniture, and other heavy items as requested by hospital departments, ensuring correct and safe placement.
  • Collect and transport general, confidential, and clinical waste, including sharps bins, from designated areas to central disposal points, following strict infection control and waste management policies.
  • Ensure all transport and lifting equipment, such as wheelchairs, trolleys, and hoists, are clean, well-maintained, and in good working order, reporting any faults immediately.
  • Provide a friendly and helpful presence throughout the hospital, offering directions and assistance to patients and visitors to help them navigate the facility.
  • Participate in the regular distribution of clean linen to wards and the collection of used linen for laundering, helping to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Assist with maintaining clear and safe access to all areas, including responding to spills, clearing corridors, and assisting with gritting/salting hospital entrances during winter.
  • Operate and respond to the hospital's bleep or radio communication system to receive tasks and provide updates on job completion in an efficient manner.
  • Provide support during major incidents or emergencies as part of the hospital's contingency plan, undertaking duties as directed by the incident commander.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the receipt and distribution of incoming goods and supplies from the central stores or loading bay to the relevant departments.
  • Undertake minor maintenance and security tasks, such as locking/unlocking specific areas of the hospital at designated times.
  • Provide relief cover for reception or other support service areas during breaks or absences as required.
  • Participate actively in mandatory training sessions, including manual handling, fire safety, infection control, and basic life support.
  • Report any observed security concerns, maintenance issues, or health and safety hazards to a supervisor or the appropriate department.
  • Escort visitors, contractors, or other personnel through the hospital as directed, ensuring they reach their destination safely.
  • Maintain a logbook or use a digital system to record all tasks undertaken, ensuring an accurate audit trail of portering activities.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Proficient in Manual Handling: Deep understanding and application of correct lifting and moving techniques for patients and heavy objects to prevent injury.
  • Equipment Operation: Ability to safely operate patient transport equipment, including wheelchairs, beds, trolleys, and patient hoists.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations: Familiarity with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), infection control protocols, and waste disposal standards.
  • Communication Systems Proficiency: Competence in using two-way radios, bleepers, or other internal communication systems to manage tasks effectively.
  • Basic IT Literacy: Ability to use task management software on a computer or handheld device to log and close down jobs.
  • Spatial Awareness and Navigation: Excellent sense of direction and ability to quickly learn and memorize complex hospital layouts.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
