Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and control multi-stand hot rolling mill equipment from a climate-controlled pulpit, utilizing Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) and computer control systems to process heated steel or other metals.
  • Continuously monitor all aspects of the rolling process, including furnace temperatures, material speed, roll pressure, and dimensional measurements, making precise real-time adjustments to ensure product conformity.
  • Interpret rolling schedules, production orders, and technical specifications to configure mill settings for different product types, sizes, and grades.
  • Execute the initial setup of the rolling mill, including the installation and alignment of guides, rolls, and other critical components prior to a production run.
  • Conduct thorough pre-operational checks on all machinery, control systems, and safety devices to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
  • Skillfully guide and thread the leading end of the hot metal slab or billet through the series of rolling stands, a critical and high-stakes procedure.
  • Manage the coiling or cutting of the finished product at the end of the rolling line, ensuring proper handling and transfer to the next stage of production.
  • Perform in-process quality control checks using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify product dimensions and surface quality against specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot operational issues, equipment malfunctions, and product defects, taking immediate corrective action to minimize downtime and material waste.
  • Maintain constant communication with team members, including furnace operators, maintenance crews, and supervisors, via radio or intercom to ensure a synchronized and efficient workflow.
  • Diligently record production data, operational parameters, and any deviations or incidents in a detailed logbook or digital tracking system for quality and performance analysis.
  • Adhere to and champion all company and OSHA safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures, proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and emergency response plans.
  • Visually inspect the metal as it moves through the mill, watching for surface imperfections, temperature variations (color), or shape defects that may indicate a process issue.
  • Assist the maintenance team in diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, or electrical problems and participate in scheduled preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, or other material handling equipment to move raw materials, finished products, and heavy equipment components.
  • Regulate the flow and application of cooling water and lubricants to the rolls and product to control temperature and prevent defects.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, offering suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, efficiency, and reducing operational costs.
  • Actively monitor alarm systems and equipment diagnostics, responding swiftly and appropriately to any alerts to prevent damage or safety hazards.
  • Ensure the work area around the mill is kept clean, organized, and free of hazards, contributing to a culture of good housekeeping.
  • Train and mentor new or less-experienced operators, sharing knowledge of best practices, safety procedures, and operational techniques.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks and preventative maintenance schedules under the guidance of the maintenance department.
  • Participate actively in daily production meetings, safety briefings ("toolbox talks"), and quality review sessions.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis investigations for production or quality issues.
  • Support inventory management by providing accurate counts and reports of processed materials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mill Control System Operation: Proficiency in operating complex machinery via PLC/HMI control pulpits.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using micrometers, calipers, tape measures, and other gauges to verify tight tolerances.
  • Blueprint & Specification Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, rolling schedules, and quality specifications.
    -Mechanical Aptitude: Strong understanding of the mechanics of heavy industrial machinery, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Overhead Crane Operation: Certified or certifiable to safely operate cab-controlled overhead cranes for handling multi-ton loads.
  • Forklift Operation: Experience in operating heavy-duty forklifts for material movement.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of experience in a heavy manufacturing, steel mill, or similar industrial environment.

Preferred:

  • Direct experience (2+ years) operating a hot or cold rolling mill. Experience in a related role such as a furnace operator, rougher, or finisher in a mill environment is also highly valued.
