Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret complex architectural blueprints, drawings, and detailed specifications to determine material requirements and the precise layout for framing.
  • Accurately measure, mark, and cut lumber, plywood, and other structural materials to exact dimensions using a variety of hand and power tools like circular saws, miter saws, and reciprocating saws.
  • Assemble and fasten pre-cut materials to construct residential building frameworks, including floor joists, subflooring, wall studs, headers, and roof trusses.
  • Erect pre-assembled wall sections and ensure they are perfectly plumb (vertical) and square before securely bracing and nailing them into place.
  • Install and brace roof trusses, rafters, and sheathing, working at heights to create the complete roof structure according to engineering specifications.
  • Frame openings for windows and doors, ensuring they are sized and positioned correctly to accommodate future installations.
  • Construct interior partitions and non-load-bearing walls to define the layout of rooms, closets, and other interior spaces.
  • Verify the trueness of all structures using levels, plumb bobs, and framing squares, making precise adjustments as necessary to maintain structural integrity and adherence to plans.
  • Operate pneumatic nail guns, screw guns, and other fastening tools efficiently and safely to join framing members securely.
  • Adhere strictly to all local, state, and national building codes, as well as company-specific safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Work collaboratively with a framing crew, communicating effectively to coordinate tasks and ensure a smooth, efficient workflow.
  • Set up and work safely on scaffolding, ladders, and aerial lifts when constructing multi-story frameworks or roof systems.
  • Identify and select the appropriate types and grades of lumber and hardware for various structural applications.
  • Perform layout tasks, including marking the position of walls, studs, and other components on the subfloor based on blueprint dimensions.
  • Install floor systems by placing joists, rim joists, and applying subfloor sheathing, ensuring a level and stable base for the structure.
  • Read and understand truss placement diagrams and engineering notes to ensure correct installation and bracing of roof systems.
  • Assist in the unloading and staging of building materials, ensuring they are protected from weather and organized for efficient access.
  • Address and correct any framing discrepancies or issues identified by site supervisors or building inspectors in a timely manner.
  • Maintain all assigned tools and equipment in good, safe working order, reporting any malfunctions for repair or replacement.
  • Contribute to a culture of safety by constantly monitoring the work environment for hazards and promoting safe work practices among team members.

  • Assist in job site cleanup, including the organization of materials and disposal of scrap wood, to maintain a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Provide on-the-job guidance and mentorship to apprentices and less experienced laborers on the crew.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Construction Math: Proficient in geometry, fractions, and calculations needed for layout, cutting angles, and material estimation.
  • Power Tool Proficiency: Expert-level operation of circular saws, miter saws, pneumatic nailers, reciprocating saws, and other common framing tools.
  • Framing Techniques: Deep knowledge of wall, floor, and roof framing methods, including stick-framing and component (truss) installation.
