Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Safely and effectively guide clients on hunting excursions for specific game species, such as elk, deer, bear, or waterfowl, ensuring strict adherence to all local, state, and federal hunting laws and regulations.
Conduct extensive pre-hunt scouting and reconnaissance missions, often weeks or months in advance, to locate game, assess herd health and animal quality, and determine optimal hunting locations and strategies.
Provide expert instruction, coaching, and mentorship to clients on advanced hunting techniques, stalking methods, firearm safety protocols, and ethical shot placement to maximize the probability of a successful and humane harvest.

Manage all aspects of complex field logistics, including transporting clients and gear to and from hunting areas using 4x4 vehicles, ATVs, horses, or by foot over rugged and challenging terrain.
Perform professional field dressing, skinning, caping, and quartering of harvested animals, ensuring the proper care, cooling, and preservation of meat and trophies for client transport.
Educate clients on local ecology, wildlife biology, animal behavior, and conservation principles, fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment and the role of ethical, sustainable hunting.
Navigate proficiently and confidently using GPS, satellite communicators, and traditional map and compass techniques in remote, often unfamiliar wilderness areas, ensuring the safety and orientation of the hunting party at all times.
Continuously monitor dynamic weather conditions and environmental hazards, making critical, safety-oriented decisions regarding the feasibility and direction of daily hunting activities.
Administer wilderness first aid and respond effectively to medical emergencies, injuries, or survival situations in a remote setting, maintaining composure and clear leadership under extreme pressure.
Handle, care for, and manage pack and saddle animals, such as horses and mules, including saddling, packing with balanced loads, feeding, and administering basic field veterinary care during multi-day trips.
Demonstrate and enforce strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles and ethical land use practices to minimize the environmental impact of all hunting and camping activities.

Secondary Functions

Establish, maintain, and break down remote hunting camps, which may include wall tents, cooking facilities, and sanitation systems, often in backcountry environments with limited resources.
Assess the physical fitness levels, hunting experience, and personal goals of each client to tailor the hunt plan accordingly, ensuring a safe, challenging, and enjoyable experience for all skill levels.
Provide high-quality hospitality and first-class customer service, building strong rapport with clients to create a memorable and positive experience, independent of the hunt's outcome.
Assist in general camp duties, including meal preparation, cooking over a fire or stove, cleaning, chopping wood, and performing general maintenance to ensure a comfortable and functional camp for all.
Maintain, clean, and manage all outfitter-provided hunting gear, including firearms, optics, communication devices, vehicles, and safety equipment, ensuring they are in excellent working condition.
Communicate effectively and professionally with the outfitter, other guides, and camp staff to coordinate daily plans, share wildlife intelligence, and manage client logistics.
Accurately complete and file all necessary post-hunt documentation, including harvest reports for wildlife agencies, client feedback forms, and internal incident reports.
Participate in crucial pre-season and post-season operational tasks, such as clearing trails, repairing camp facilities, conducting equipment inventory, and engaging in habitat improvement projects.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
