Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and apply mechanical blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings to accurately lay out and install HVAC systems.
  • Install, assemble, and secure a variety of HVAC equipment, including air handling units, rooftop units, VAV boxes, fan coil units, heat pumps, and furnaces.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install sheet metal ductwork, fittings, and plenums according to project specifications and SMACNA standards.
  • Measure, cut, and install refrigerant lines, including performing precise brazing and soldering on copper piping to ensure leak-free connections.
  • Set, anchor, and level heavy equipment using hoists, lifts, and rigging equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform system startups and commissioning procedures to ensure all installed components operate correctly and meet design performance criteria.
  • Conduct pressure and leak tests on ductwork and piping systems to verify system integrity before insulation and startup.
  • Install and connect grilles, diffusers, registers, and other air distribution components for a complete and functional system.
  • Perform low-voltage wiring for thermostats, controls, and associated HVAC components.
  • Insulate ductwork and refrigerant lines to prevent energy loss and condensation, using appropriate materials and techniques.
  • Coordinate installation activities with other construction trades, such as electricians, plumbers, and framers, to avoid conflicts and maintain project schedules.
  • Maintain strict adherence to all local, state, and federal building codes, as well as job-site safety regulations (OSHA).
  • Operate a wide range of hand and power tools, including drills, saws, grinders, and sheet metal fabrication equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve installation challenges and discrepancies that may arise on the job site in a timely and effective manner.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to apprentices and less experienced installers, fostering a culture of skill development.
  • Document daily work progress, materials used, and any issues encountered through daily reports or project management software.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of materials, tools, and equipment for assigned tasks on the job site.
  • Participate in pre-installation planning meetings to provide input on constructability and logistics.
  • Execute the complete installation of hydronic piping systems, including chilled water and hot water lines, for HVAC applications.
  • Ensure all work is completed to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship, contributing to the overall success of the project.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in daily safety briefings, "toolbox talks," and company-wide safety training programs.
  • Assist service technicians with advanced diagnostics or repairs on newly installed systems when required.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the work area, company vehicles, and shared tools.
  • Provide feedback to project managers and estimators on labor hours and material usage to improve future bidding accuracy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and execute complex mechanical plans.
  • Sheet Metal Fabrication: Skilled in creating and assembling ductwork and fittings per SMACNA standards.
  • Brazing and Soldering: Proficiency in joining copper piping for refrigerant lines with precision.
  • HVAC System Installation: Comprehensive knowledge of installing various types of equipment (RTUs, AHUs, Split Systems).
  • Refrigerant Handling: EPA 608 Universal Certification for proper handling and charging of refrigerants.
  • Ductwork Installation: Expertise in hanging, sealing, and insulating duct systems for optimal airflow.
  • Use of Tools and Equipment: Safe and efficient operation of power tools, lifts, and rigging equipment.
  • Knowledge of Building Codes: Strong understanding of IMC, UMC, and local mechanical codes.
  • System Commissioning: Experience with startup procedures and performance testing.
  • Low-Voltage Electrical Wiring: Competency in wiring thermostats, sensors, and control systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Completion of a registered HVAC or Sheet Metal Apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of documented, hands-on experience in commercial or large-scale residential HVAC installation.

Preferred:

  • Experience as a lead installer or crew leader on commercial construction projects.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience with specialized systems such as VRF/VRV, chillers, or building automation systems.
