Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Install, assemble, and fit HVAC systems including furnaces, air handlers, heat pumps, ductwork, chillers, and ventilation units according to project specifications.
- Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings to accurately lay out HVAC system components.
- Measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble metal, plastic, and copper piping and ductwork using hand and power tools.
- Perform precise alignment and leveling of HVAC equipment to ensure optimal system performance and longevity.
- Connect HVAC systems to fuel, water, refrigerant, electrical, and control systems in compliance with local and national codes.
- Test newly installed HVAC systems for proper airflow, temperature control, pressure balance, and overall functionality.
- Diagnose mechanical and system faults using testing instruments, gauges, and diagnostic tools.
- Repair or replace defective components such as motors, compressors, fans, belts, valves, sensors, and thermostats.
- Conduct routine preventative maintenance to improve system efficiency, reduce downtime, and extend equipment lifespan.
- Ensure proper handling, recovery, and disposal of refrigerants in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Seal, insulate, and weatherproof ductwork and piping to prevent energy loss and ensure system efficiency.
- Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, builders, and other trades to integrate HVAC systems into overall building infrastructure.
- Follow job site safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures, confined space practices, and PPE requirements.
- Maintain accurate service records, installation reports, and maintenance logs for compliance and auditing purposes.
- Communicate technical information clearly to supervisors, clients, and site managers regarding system status and issues.
- Verify that all installations meet manufacturer specifications, building codes, and industry standards.
- Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and replacements in occupied and operational facilities.
- Perform start-up and commissioning activities for new HVAC installations.
- Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and recommend system enhancements or upgrades.
- Respond to emergency service calls and perform urgent repairs to restore heating or cooling functionality.
