Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist lead HVAC technicians and installers in all phases of the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
  • Safely and efficiently load and unload tools, equipment, and materials from company vehicles and transport them to and from the immediate work area.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site by clearing debris, organizing tools, and adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols.
  • Assist in the fabrication and assembly of sheet metal ductwork, fittings, and other HVAC components according to specifications and lead technician guidance.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy equipment (over 50 lbs), climbing ladders and scaffolding, and working in confined spaces like attics and crawlspaces.
  • Prepare residential and commercial job sites for installation, which includes laying down protective coverings, clearing work areas, and staging materials.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, such as drills, saws, and grinders, ensuring safe handling and proper maintenance.
  • Assist in the proper setting and positioning of new HVAC units, including condensing units, air handlers, furnaces, and rooftop package units.
  • Help with the installation of refrigerant lines, including cutting, bending, and insulating copper tubing under the direct supervision of a licensed technician.
  • Support the installation of low-voltage and high-voltage wiring by drilling holes, pulling wires, and mounting electrical components as directed.
  • Learn to read and interpret basic blueprints, schematics, and installation manuals to understand project scope and layout.
  • Perform foundational preventative maintenance tasks, such as cleaning evaporator and condenser coils, changing air filters, and clearing drain lines.
  • Ensure all tools, parts, and equipment are accounted for and securely stored in the company vehicle at the end of each workday.
  • Run errands to supply houses to pick up necessary parts, materials, and equipment to prevent project delays.
  • Assist senior technicians in diagnosing system malfunctions by helping with pressure tests and other preliminary diagnostic steps.
  • Follow precise instructions from the lead installer to ensure all work meets company quality standards and industry best practices.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of local and national HVAC codes to ensure all installations and repairs are compliant.
  • Provide support in connecting and sealing ductwork using tape, mastic, and other approved materials to ensure system efficiency.
  • Assist with the removal and proper disposal of old HVAC equipment and related materials from the job site.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining an accurate inventory of parts, supplies, and materials stocked on the assigned service vehicle.

Secondary Functions

  • Engage in continuous learning by actively participating in on-the-job training, company-sponsored workshops, and safety meetings.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with clients on-site, answering basic non-technical questions and referring complex inquiries to the lead technician.
  • Assist in documenting work performed, including logging materials used and hours worked for accurate job costing and invoicing.
  • Ensure the assigned company vehicle is kept clean, organized, and well-maintained, reporting any mechanical issues to the fleet manager promptly.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven ability to safely operate a wide range of basic hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, wrenches, pipe cutters).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a fundamental understanding of how mechanical systems work.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting and moving objects in excess of 50 pounds, climbing, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Capacity to accurately read and use a tape measure and other basic measurement tools.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is essential for operating company vehicles.
  • Basic knowledge of job site safety practices; OSHA 10 certification is a significant plus.
  • Familiarity with construction, plumbing, or electrical work is highly beneficial.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years
