Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop comprehensive HVAC system designs from the conceptual phase through to final construction documents, including detailed ductwork and piping layouts.
- Perform intricate heating and cooling load calculations using industry-standard software like HAP, TRACE 3D Plus, or similar tools to accurately determine system capacity requirements.
- Select and specify major HVAC equipment, such as air handling units, rooftop units, chillers, boilers, pumps, and VAV boxes, ensuring they meet project specifications and energy goals.
- Create and lay out detailed ductwork and hydronic piping systems, ensuring proper sizing, routing, and coordination with other building systems like structural and electrical.
- Prepare complete sets of construction documents, including detailed mechanical drawings, system schematics, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and comprehensive technical specifications.
- Ensure all designs rigorously comply with relevant building codes (e.g., IMC, IBC), accessibility standards, and energy conservation codes like ASHRAE 90.1 and local energy mandates.
- Utilize Autodesk Revit to create and manage detailed 3D models of HVAC systems, facilitating clash detection and seamless coordination with architectural and structural models.
- Develop and write detailed sequences of operation and control strategies to ensure the HVAC system performs efficiently and meets the occupant's comfort requirements.
- Collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, and electrical engineers to integrate the HVAC system holistically within the overall building design.
- Participate in design review meetings with clients, architects, and project stakeholders to present design concepts and incorporate feedback.
- Conduct thorough site surveys and field investigations to document existing conditions, verify measurements, and identify potential challenges for renovation or retrofit projects.
