Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, calibrate, and continuously improve complex hydrological and statistical models to produce accurate short-term (hourly/daily) and long-term (seasonal/annual) water inflow forecasts.
  • Analyze and interpret large, complex datasets from diverse sources, including SCADA, telemetered weather stations, government agencies (e.g., USGS, NOAA), and satellite imagery.
  • Formulate and execute optimal generation schedules and bidding strategies for our hydropower assets in various energy and ancillary service markets to maximize revenue.
  • Conduct in-depth performance analysis of hydro generating units, identifying and diagnosing inefficiencies and recommending operational improvements or capital projects.
  • Monitor and analyze real-time market conditions, weather patterns, and grid constraints to provide actionable recommendations to power traders and plant operators.
  • Prepare and present detailed analytical reports, dashboards, and data visualizations to senior management, traders, and other stakeholders to communicate key findings and performance metrics.
  • Perform post-analysis of generation and trading performance, identifying drivers of forecast error and profitability to refine models and strategies.
  • Collaborate with asset managers to develop long-term operational plans, budget forecasts, and risk assessments based on hydrological outlooks and market projections.
  • Evaluate the impact of regulatory changes, environmental constraints (e.g., fish passage, minimum flows), and water rights on plant operations and financial performance.
  • Support the due diligence process for potential acquisitions of new hydropower assets by providing expert analysis on water resources and potential generation.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and automated tools (primarily in Python or R) to streamline data acquisition, processing, and analysis workflows.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on hydrology and meteorology, providing crucial context and insights to cross-functional teams.
  • Translate complex model outputs and statistical analyses into clear, concise, and actionable business intelligence for non-technical audiences.
  • Monitor and research new technologies, modeling techniques, and data sources to enhance the company's forecasting and analytical capabilities.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for all models, tools, and analytical processes to ensure transparency and knowledge sharing.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis from various business units, including finance, risk, and corporate development.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader data strategy and roadmap by identifying new data sources and analytical opportunities.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data-driven insights and operational needs into tangible engineering and software development requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies within the data and analytics team.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior analysts and other team members on hydrological concepts and analytical best practices.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and reporting requirements associated with water management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Hydrological Modeling: Proficiency in developing and applying statistical, conceptual, or physically-based hydrological models for inflow forecasting.
  • Programming & Scripting: Strong proficiency in Python (with libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib) and/or R for data manipulation, automation, and statistical analysis.
  • Database Management: Solid experience with SQL for querying and managing large relational databases.
  • Data Visualization: Expertise in creating insightful dashboards and reports using BI tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • GIS Software: Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software like ArcGIS or QGIS for spatial data analysis and visualization.
  • Statistical Analysis: Deep understanding of time-series analysis, regression, machine learning, and other statistical methods.
  • Energy Market Knowledge: Working knowledge of deregulated electricity markets, including day-ahead, real-time, and ancillary service markets.
  • SCADA Systems: Experience working with and analyzing data from SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems is a significant plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant quantitative or scientific field is required.

Preferred Education:

  • A Master's or Ph.D. in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Data Science, or a related discipline is highly preferred.
