Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex preventative and corrective maintenance on large-scale hydroelectric turbines, generators, governors, and associated auxiliary equipment to ensure maximum availability and performance.
  • Operate, monitor, and control plant generating units and water management systems using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and other digital control interfaces.
  • Execute intricate electrical and mechanical troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions, minimizing downtime and production losses.
  • Conduct routine and highly detailed inspections of powerhouse infrastructure, including dams, spillways, penstocks, and high-voltage switchyards, documenting conditions and identifying potential issues.
  • Read, interpret, and work from complex technical documents, including electrical schematics, mechanical blueprints, P&IDs (Piping and Instrument Diagrams), and logic diagrams.
  • Perform high-voltage switching operations and implement lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures to ensure the safe isolation of equipment for maintenance activities.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and repair a wide range of instrumentation and control devices, including sensors, transmitters, and automated valve actuators.
  • Utilize predictive maintenance technologies such as vibration analysis, oil analysis, and infrared thermography to proactively identify developing equipment failures.
  • Safely operate heavy and specialized equipment, including overhead cranes, hoists, forklifts, and aerial lifts, to support maintenance and operational tasks.
  • Maintain meticulous records of all maintenance activities, operational logs, equipment performance data, and safety reports using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Respond to and troubleshoot plant emergencies and alarms, taking decisive action to stabilize conditions and restore normal operations safely.
  • Install, commission, and test new or replacement equipment as part of capital improvement and plant upgrade projects.
  • Conduct functional tests on protection relays, circuit breakers, and other critical electrical protective devices to verify their operational integrity.
  • Perform precision mechanical tasks such as shaft alignment, bearing replacement, and component balancing on rotating machinery.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company, state, and federal (e.g., OSHA, NERC, FERC) safety and environmental regulations and procedures.
  • Monitor and manage water levels, flows, and discharge to optimize power generation while complying with environmental and regulatory constraints.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and external contractors to plan and execute major overhauls and complex repair projects.
  • Fabricate or modify components using machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, and welding tools, to facilitate repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain station backup power systems, including AC/DC electrical distribution panels and battery banks.
  • Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) investigations for equipment failures and safety incidents to develop and implement effective corrective actions.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance procedures, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
  • Support the management of spare parts inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and organizing critical components to ensure availability.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentice technicians and less experienced team members.
  • Participate in environmental compliance activities, such as water quality sampling, spill response drills, and regulatory reporting support.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • SCADA & Control Systems: Proficiency in operating and monitoring equipment via SCADA systems and digital control platforms.
  • Electrical Troubleshooting: Strong ability to diagnose and repair issues in AC/DC circuits, motors, and high-voltage systems (up to 230kV).
  • Mechanical Maintenance: Expertise in maintaining heavy rotating equipment, including turbines, pumps, and generators, along with strong skills in alignment and rigging.
  • Schematic & Blueprint Reading: Advanced ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic schematics and diagrams.
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Deep understanding and disciplined application of hazardous energy control procedures.
  • Predictive Maintenance (PdM): Experience with technologies like vibration analysis, infrared thermography, and oil analysis.
  • Instrumentation & Calibration: Skill in calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing various types of process instrumentation.
  • CMMS Proficiency: Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g., SAP, Maximo) for work order management and record-keeping.
  • Welding & Fabrication: Basic to intermediate skills in welding (SMAW, TIG) and operating machine shop tools.
  • Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: Solid knowledge of the principles and maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by a completed apprenticeship in a relevant trade (e.g., electrician, millwright) or equivalent military technical training.

Preferred Education:

Associate of Science (A.S.) or Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.

Experience Requirements
