Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Compile and critically evaluate a diverse range of hydrographic, topographic, and oceanographic source data, including multibeam echosounder (MBES), side-scan sonar, Lidar, and satellite-derived bathymetry.
- Author, update, and maintain official nautical charts in both digital (Electronic Navigational Charts - ENC) and raster/paper formats to ensure they are fit for the purpose of safe navigation.
- Perform rigorous quality control and assurance checks on geospatial data and cartographic products to verify compliance with international (IHO S-57/S-100 series) and national cartographic standards.
- Apply advanced cartographic principles, including symbolization, generalization, and feature selection, to ensure chart clarity and prevent information overload.
- Process and apply critical safety updates, such as Notice to Mariners (NTMs), to all relevant navigational products in a timely and accurate manner.
- Manage and maintain the integrity of large-scale hydrographic and cartographic databases, ensuring data lineage, metadata, and versioning are meticulously documented.
- Create high-resolution digital bathymetric models, gridded surfaces, and contours from processed survey data for charting and scientific analysis.
- Collaborate directly with hydrographic surveyors and data processors to understand data limitations, resolve ambiguities, and ensure a seamless flow of information from field to chart.
- Research, assess, and integrate new or non-traditional data sources, such as crowdsourced bathymetry and satellite imagery, to enhance chart coverage and accuracy.
- Perform complex geodetic computations, datum transformations, and projection conversions to ensure all data aligns within a common, reliable spatial framework.
- Analyze and resolve complex cartographic compilation issues, such as feature conflict, data gaps, and depiction of intricate maritime features like traffic separation schemes and anchorage areas.
- Generate and validate shoreline data from various sources, including aerial photography, satellite imagery, and Lidar, to accurately depict the land-sea interface.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and workflow diagrams for cartographic production processes.
- Utilize scripting languages, primarily Python, to automate repetitive data processing and cartographic tasks, improving efficiency and consistency.
- Create specialized thematic maps and custom charting products for a variety of stakeholders, including coastal zone managers, marine biologists, and port authorities.
- Participate in the validation and testing of new cartographic software, production systems, and evolving data standards like the IHO S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model.
- Liaise with external maritime authorities, stakeholders, and the public to address chart-related inquiries and provide expert guidance.
- Interpret and compile man-made and natural features from source materials, ensuring accurate attribution and representation on the final product.
- Manage chart schemas, feature catalogues, and symbol libraries to maintain consistency across the entire suite of navigational products.
