Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive site assessments and feasibility studies for new hydroponic projects, evaluating environmental factors, infrastructure, water quality, and resource availability.
  • Design and develop customized hydroponic system layouts—including Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Deep Water Culture (DWC), and aeroponic systems—tailored to specific crop requirements and client objectives.
  • Provide expert recommendations on crop selection, cultivar sourcing, and strategic planting schedules to maximize yield, quality, and alignment with market demands.
  • Formulate, manage, and continuously refine complex nutrient recipes and feeding schedules, meticulously monitoring and adjusting EC, pH, and dissolved oxygen levels for optimal plant health.
  • Develop and implement robust Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, emphasizing biological controls and sustainable practices to prevent and manage pests and diseases proactively.
  • Advise on the selection, procurement, installation, and calibration of advanced environmental control systems, including HVAC, supplemental lighting (LEDs), CO2 enrichment, and irrigation automation.
  • Train client personnel, including growers, technicians, and farm managers, on daily operational procedures, advanced crop management techniques, and proper data collection protocols.
  • Establish and oversee comprehensive data tracking and analysis programs to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as yield per square foot, resource consumption, and labor efficiency.
  • Act as the lead troubleshooter to diagnose and resolve complex issues within existing operations, including nutrient deficiencies, disease outbreaks, system malfunctions, and yield inconsistencies.
  • Author detailed operational manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and technical reports to ensure operational consistency, quality control, and knowledge transfer for clients.
  • Stay at the forefront of cutting-edge research, emerging technologies, and industry trends in controlled environment agriculture to provide innovative and competitive solutions.
  • Guide clients through the process of achieving food safety certifications (e.g., GlobalG.A.P., PrimusGFS) by developing and implementing robust sanitation, hygiene, and traceability protocols.
  • Provide financial modeling support, including forecasting operational expenditures (OpEx), capital expenditures (CapEx), and return on investment (ROI) for proposed and existing hydroponic ventures.
  • Liaise with vendors and suppliers to source high-quality equipment, consumables, and genetics, often negotiating pricing and terms on behalf of the client to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Direct clients through the entire project lifecycle, from initial concept and design through construction management, system commissioning, and ongoing operational support and optimization.
  • Conduct regular system audits and performance reviews, delivering actionable insights and strategic recommendations for continuous improvement, expansion, and increased profitability.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise in plant science, horticulture, and agronomy, specifically within a soilless, controlled environment context.
  • Proficiency in the design, operation, and maintenance of various hydroponic systems (e.g., NFT, DWC, ebb and flow, aeroponics, vertical towers).
  • Advanced knowledge of plant nutrition, including the ability to formulate, analyze, and manage complex multi-part nutrient solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with environmental control and automation software/hardware (e.g., Priva, Argus, Hoogendoorn, or similar platforms).
  • A strong, practical understanding of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), biological control agents, and plant pathology.
  • Competency in data analysis and visualization for interpreting crop performance, environmental data, and operational KPIs.
