Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform routine and scheduled preventive maintenance on a diverse portfolio of commercial ice machines, including brands like Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, and Scotsman, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Systematically diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration failures in ice production equipment, identifying root causes to prevent recurrence.
  • Expertly disassemble, repair, and reassemble ice machines and their core components, such as compressors, evaporators, water pumps, control boards, and harvest-assist mechanisms.
  • Conduct comprehensive cleaning and sanitization of ice machines, storage bins, and dispensers in strict accordance with public health regulations and food safety standards (e.g., HACCP).
  • Meticulously monitor, maintain, and replace water filtration systems and cartridges to guarantee high water quality and prevent scale buildup that can damage machinery.
  • Calibrate machine settings to optimize ice production volume, cube clarity and size, and energy efficiency based on operational demands and manufacturer specifications.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to urgent, unscheduled service calls for malfunctioning or broken-down ice machines to minimize operational downtime for clients or facilities.
  • Confidently read and interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and detailed technical manuals to guide troubleshooting and repair processes.
  • Maintain a precise and organized inventory of spare parts, specialized tools, and essential supplies, and process orders for new components as needed.
  • Diligently document all service activities, including repairs performed, parts used, and time spent, within a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or service log.
  • Perform refrigerant recovery, system evacuation, and precise recharging of refrigeration systems in full compliance with federal EPA Section 608 regulations.
  • Test, diagnose, and replace faulty refrigeration components, including thermostats, solenoid valves, pressure controls, and expansion valves.
  • Ensure all work is performed in a consistently safe manner, rigorously adhering to company safety policies, OSHA standards, and proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Provide clear, concise, and professional communication to managers, colleagues, or clients regarding the status of repairs, required parts, and estimated completion timelines.
  • Skillfully install new ice machine units, which includes running water lines, installing proper drainage, and making final electrical connections according to code.
  • Train end-users, such as kitchen staff or facility employees, on the basic daily operation, cleaning procedures, and simple troubleshooting for their ice machines.
  • Conduct regular, thorough inspections of ice machine performance, proactively checking for water or refrigerant leaks, unusual noises, and temperature inconsistencies.
  • Identify and recommend opportunities for improving machine efficiency, suggesting equipment upgrades, retrofits, or replacements to enhance reliability and reduce costs.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize a daily or weekly queue of work orders to ensure the timely and efficient completion of all assigned maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Safely handle and transport heavy equipment and components using appropriate lifting techniques, dollies, and other material handling equipment.
  • Verify the proper operation of the entire ice-making cycle, from the initial water fill and freeze cycle to the final harvest and storage of ice.
  • Address and resolve a variety of plumbing-related issues connected to the ice machines, such as inadequate water pressure, flow rates, and clogged drain lines.
