Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize and design custom ice sculptures, bars, luges, and logos based on detailed client specifications, event themes, and creative briefs.
  • Operate and expertly maintain a wide range of specialized ice carving equipment, including chainsaws, die grinders, sanders, and various hand chisels.
  • Program, set up, and operate CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines to execute precise and complex designs with high fidelity.
  • Skillfully carve, shape, texturize, and detail 300-pound Clinebell ice blocks to create intricate, high-quality finished sculptures.
  • Manage the safe and secure logistics of transporting delicate and heavy ice sculptures from the production studio to various event venues, ensuring their structural integrity.
  • Perform on-site installation and professional setup of sculptures, which includes managing custom lighting, implementing effective drainage systems, and ensuring display stability for the event's duration.
  • Conduct engaging live ice carving demonstrations at corporate events, weddings, and festivals, professionally interacting with guests while showcasing the artistic process.
  • Collaborate directly with event planners, floral designers, caterers, and clients to ensure the ice element seamlessly integrates with the overall event aesthetic and logistics.
  • Oversee the entire project lifecycle from initial client consultation and design mock-ups to final on-site teardown and responsible cleanup.
  • Perform rigorous quality control checks at every stage of production to guarantee each sculpture meets the highest standards of craftsmanship and client expectation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any on-site issues that may arise, such as unexpected melting due to environmental factors, structural adjustments, or lighting malfunctions, with swift and creative solutions.
  • Develop and refine new sculpting techniques, finishes, and design concepts to expand the company's creative portfolio and maintain a competitive edge.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe production studio, strictly adhering to all safety protocols for tool usage, heavy lifting, and ice block handling.
  • Manage the inventory of crystal-clear ice blocks, tools, and production supplies, coordinating orders to ensure operational readiness for all projects.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise junior carvers or studio apprentices, providing constructive feedback and guidance on safety, advanced techniques, and artistic development.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the sales and design team in creating accurate project proposals and quotes by providing expert input on time, materials, and complexity.
  • Professionally photograph and document finished sculptures on-site for use in the company’s marketing materials, social media channels, and portfolio.
  • Participate in pre-event site visits to assess venue logistics, including load-in access, power availability, and optimal placement for the ice installation.
  • Research, test, and recommend new tools, technologies, and materials that can enhance the quality, efficiency, and creative possibilities of the sculpting process.
  • Handle the complete breakdown and clean disposal of ice sculptures post-event, ensuring the venue is returned to its original condition.
  • Contribute creative ideas during team brainstorming sessions for new product offerings, seasonal promotions, and innovative marketing campaigns.
  • Maintain meticulous project records, including design files, client communications, production notes, and delivery details for future reference and process improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Power Tool Proficiency: Mastery of chainsaws, die grinders, angle grinders, and various sanders for shaping and detailing ice.
  • Hand-Carving Expertise: Exceptional skill with traditional tools such as Japanese ice chisels, gouges, handsaws, and irons for fine detail work.
  • CNC Machine Operation: Experience programming and operating 3-axis or 5-axis CNC routers specifically calibrated for ice.
  • Rigging and Material Handling: Knowledge of safe lifting and rigging techniques for moving heavy (300+ lbs), fragile sculptures using gantry cranes, carts, and team lifting.
  • Ice Science Knowledge: A deep understanding of ice physics, including tempering, melting rates, structural integrity, and techniques for creating and maintaining clarity.
    -Design Interpretation: Ability to read and translate 2D sketches, digital renderings, and CAD files into three-dimensional sculptures.

  • Graphic/CAD Software: Familiarity with software like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, or Vectric Aspire for creating CNC toolpaths and design templates.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts (BFA), Sculpture, Industrial Design, or a Certificate from a reputable Culinary Arts program with a focus on Garde Manger/Carving.
