Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor and adjust commercial ice-making equipment and automated freezers to maintain target production rates and product specifications, ensuring consistent ice quality and yield across shifts.
  • Load, bag, block, and palletize finished ice products following specified weights, sealing, and packaging protocols while maintaining product integrity and preventing contamination.
  • Perform routine cleaning, sanitation, and CIP (clean-in-place) tasks on ice production lines and contact surfaces in compliance with HACCP, GMP and facility-specific food safety plans, documenting activities accurately.
  • Inspect incoming raw water treatment systems, filters, and supply lines for proper operation and report irregularities that may affect ice quality or plant throughput.
  • Conduct basic quality control checks — visual inspection for clarity or clouding, sampling for foreign matter, and verifying bag seals and label accuracy — and remove nonconforming product per established procedures.
  • Monitor and record critical control points (CCPs) such as brine temperature, freezer set points, and storage temperatures; enter data into logs and digital systems for traceability and regulatory audits.
  • Operate pallet jacks and sit/stand forklifts to move pallets of finished ice, raw materials and packaging supplies in cold storage while ensuring load stability and compliance with material handling policies.
  • Assist maintenance staff with preventative maintenance tasks like gasket replacement, motor lubrication, and belt adjustments, and escalate mechanical issues quickly to minimize production downtime.
  • Execute opening and closing shift routines including machine pre-start inspections, sanitation handoffs, and comprehensive operator changeover checklists to ensure continuous, safe operation.
  • Maintain neat, labeled and FIFO-organized cold storage and packaging areas to optimize product flow, reduce waste, and ensure accurate order fulfillment for wholesale and retail accounts.
  • Participate in daily production meetings and pre-shift briefs, communicating line status, safety observations, yield variances and improvement ideas to supervisors and cross-functional teams.
  • Follow all company and regulatory safety protocols including PPE use, lockout/tagout (LOTO) for equipment service, and cold-exposure best practices to protect team members and product safety.
  • Pack, load and secure outbound pallets for delivery or transfer, complete shipping documentation and collaborate with logistics partners to meet customer delivery timelines and special handling requirements.
  • Track and report production metrics such as pounds produced per hour, scrap rates, downtime events and sanitation completion to supervisors to support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Execute weight checks, verify bag counts and labeling before release to distribution, and correct variance issues to prevent invoicing or customer complaints.
  • Train and cross-train new operators and temporary staff on machine operation, safety standards and sanitation protocols to ensure consistent skill levels and coverage across shifts.
  • Maintain accurate usage and inventory records for packaging supplies, spare parts and detergents; initiate purchase requests or replenish stock to avoid line stoppages.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as equipment failure, power loss or water supply interruptions by following emergency procedures and assisting in recovery and product disposition decisions.
  • Implement and follow pest control, drain maintenance and waste management practices appropriate for ice production environments to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance and sanitation teams during audits and inspections, providing production records, SOP adherence evidence and corrective action follow-up as needed.
  • Assist in minor mechanical troubleshooting (e.g., checking sensors, resetting controls, clearing blockages) and accurately document issues and repairs for the maintenance team.
  • Apply food safety and traceability practices when handling returns, product holds and lot quarantines, ensuring secure storage and communication with QA for disposition.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc inventory counts and cycle counts for packaging materials, pallets and finished goods stored in cold rooms.
  • Collaborate on process improvement projects that reduce melt, packaging defects or labor time; contribute operator-level suggestions and test simple trials under supervision.
  • Provide backup support for customer order staging and special packaging requests during peak seasons or high-demand events.
  • Assist with basic sanitation chemical mixing, storage and labeling according to SDS guidance and company policies.
  • Participate in safety committees or continuous improvement huddles, offering operator feedback on safety hazards, near-misses and production efficiencies.
  • Cross-train in adjacent production or warehouse roles (e.g., shipping/receiving, quality checks) to enhance team flexibility and coverage.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven operation of commercial ice machines, block and flake ice makers, batch freezers and automated packaging lines.
  • Forklift and pallet jack operation with current certification for cold-storage environments.
  • Practical understanding of HACCP, GMP, ServSafe or equivalent food-safety systems applied to ice production.
  • Basic refrigeration and mechanical troubleshooting skills (pump/motor/belt/gasket checks) to assist maintenance and reduce downtime.
