Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct one-on-one IELTS Speaking tests with candidates, adhering strictly to the standardized interlocutor frame and script to ensure a consistent test experience for all.
  • Elicit a ratable and extensive sample of spoken English from candidates across a wide range of proficiency levels by using prescribed questions and prompts effectively.
  • Assess candidate performance in the Speaking module live or from recordings, applying the detailed IELTS Speaking band descriptors accurately and consistently.
  • Evaluate and score candidate responses for the IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 (both Academic and General Training modules) based on the four analytical criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date understanding of the IELTS assessment criteria, band descriptors, and all relevant examination procedures.
  • Participate in mandatory and regular certification, re-certification, and standardization training sessions to ensure scoring alignment with global standards.
  • Uphold the absolute integrity and security of the test materials and candidate data at all times, ensuring strict confidentiality before, during, and after examination sessions.
  • Provide clear, detailed, and defensible ratings for candidate performances, ensuring that scores are a true reflection of the candidate's ability on the day of the test.
  • Manage the timing and structure of the Speaking interview precisely, ensuring each part of the test is completed within the allocated time frame.
  • Demonstrate a high level of cultural sensitivity and professionalism when interacting with a diverse and international pool of test-takers.
  • Complete all post-examination administrative tasks accurately, such as submitting scores and completing examiner reports in a timely manner.
  • Work effectively as part of a larger team of examiners and administrative staff on test days to ensure smooth and efficient test delivery.
  • Remain impartial and objective at all times, avoiding any form of bias and ensuring every candidate is assessed purely on their language performance against the criteria.
  • Proactively identify and report any test day incidents, candidate malpractice, or security breaches to the Test Centre Administrator immediately.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures outlined in the Examiner Code of Practice and the Professional Attributes and Interpersonal Skills guidelines.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide constructive feedback on test performance to the examiner management team during standardization meetings to contribute to overall quality assurance.
  • Assist in the induction and mentoring of newly qualified examiners under the guidance of a Senior Examiner or Examiner Trainer.
  • Participate in regular professional development activities to stay current with trends in language assessment, teaching methodologies, and second language acquisition.
  • Attend all scheduled examiner meetings and calibration workshops as required by the test center to maintain active status.
  • Support ad-hoc quality assurance checks and remote marking audits as requested by the central IELTS partners (British Council, IDP, Cambridge).
  • Contribute to a positive and professional atmosphere on test days, helping to put nervous candidates at ease while maintaining the formal nature of the examination.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Native or C2 Level English Proficiency: Demonstrable, expert-level command of the English language, equivalent to CEFR Level C2.
  • Linguistic Analysis: Deep understanding of descriptive grammar, syntax, lexis, and phonology to accurately analyze language output.
  • Assessment Literacy: In-depth knowledge of language testing principles and the specific IELTS public band descriptors for all four assessment criteria.
  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in using online scoring platforms, administrative systems, and communication tools for training and score submission.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • An undergraduate or Bachelor's degree in any field.

Preferred Education:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics).
  • A recognized TEFL, TESOL, or CELTA qualification (or equivalent).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 3 years of full-time, post-qualification experience teaching English to adults (16 years and over). This experience should be relevant and cumulative, not based on scattered or private one-on-one tutoring.

Preferred:

  • 5+ years of experience teaching English in an academic or test-preparation context.
  • Experience teaching a diverse range of age groups, cultural backgrounds, and proficiency levels.
  • Prior experience with high-stakes language testing environments is highly advantageous.
