Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate sophisticated diagnostic imaging equipment such as X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to produce high-quality, clinically valuable images.
  • Accurately interpret physicians' scanning instructions, administer contrast materials, and position patients correctly to capture the precise anatomical areas requested.
  • Ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the imaging process by clearly explaining procedures, answering questions, and providing compassionate support.
  • Adhere strictly to radiation protection standards and protocols, including the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle, to minimize exposure to patients and staff.
  • Evaluate the technical quality of all captured images, making necessary adjustments to equipment and patient positioning to ensure diagnostic utility and clarity.
  • Maintain meticulous and confidential patient records by documenting procedures, patient history, and any adverse reactions within the EHR and Radiology Information System (RIS).
  • Collaborate effectively with radiologists, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team to clarify orders and provide technical insights on image acquisition.
  • Perform routine quality control checks and calibrations on all imaging equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with imaging systems and related software (PACS/RIS), escalating complex problems to biomedical engineering or vendor support as needed.
  • Maintain a sterile, safe, and organized work environment by cleaning and stocking procedure rooms and adhering to infection control policies.
  • Prepare and administer contrast media and other medications as prescribed by a physician and in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Verify patient identification and procedure orders meticulously before beginning any imaging examination to prevent medical errors.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and condition during and after procedures, responding promptly and effectively to any medical emergencies or adverse reactions.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new imaging technologists, students, and other clinical staff on departmental procedures and equipment use.
  • Manage patient flow and scheduling efficiently to minimize wait times and maximize departmental productivity without compromising care quality.
  • Review and update imaging protocols in collaboration with radiologists and departmental leadership to incorporate best practices and new technologies.
  • Participate in departmental and hospital-wide quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain inventory of imaging supplies, contrast agents, and other necessary materials, placing orders as needed to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Stay current with advancements in medical imaging technology, techniques, and safety standards through continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Process and archive digital images using the PACS system, ensuring proper routing to radiologists for interpretation and inclusion in the patient's medical record.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Modality Proficiency: Expertise in operating specific imaging equipment (e.g., GE, Siemens, Philips) for X-ray, CT, MRI, or other modalities.
  • PACS/RIS Fluency: High proficiency with Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS) for image management and documentation.
  • Venipuncture/IV Skills: Competency in performing venipuncture for the administration of intravenous contrast agents.
  • Anatomical Knowledge: Deep understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy to ensure accurate patient positioning and image capture.
  • Image Quality Assessment: Critical eye for evaluating diagnostic images to identify and correct issues related to artifacts, positioning, or technique.
  • Radiation Safety: Comprehensive knowledge of radiation protection principles, dose monitoring, and safety protocols.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Science (A.S.) in Radiologic Technology or a related accredited medical imaging program.
  • Current certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • State licensure where applicable.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Radiologic Technology or Medical Imaging.
  • Advanced ARRT certification in a secondary modality (e.g., CT, MR, VI).
