Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Skillfully and accurately pour a high volume of PVS, alginate, and digital impressions using various dental stones and plasters, ensuring a bubble-free and dense cast.
  • Expertly trim and finish plaster and stone models to precise specifications using model trimmers, lathes, and hand tools, respecting critical anatomical landmarks.
  • Read and meticulously interpret laboratory prescriptions (Rx) to understand case requirements, including specific articulation needs, model work, and appliance type.
  • Mount models accurately onto various types of articulators (e.g., Denar, SAM, Artex) according to the provided bite registration, ensuring proper occlusal relationships.
  • Fabricate custom impression trays, base plates, and wax bite rims that are stable, well-fitting, and comfortable for the patient's final impression appointment.
  • Perform initial quality control checks on all incoming impressions from dental offices, identifying and flagging any distortions, bubbles, or pulls that could compromise the final restoration.
  • Operate digital scanning equipment (e.g., 3Shape, Medit) to convert physical models and impressions into high-resolution 3D digital files for the CAD/CAM design workflow.
  • Pin and base models for crown and bridge cases, ensuring dies are stable, easily removable, and precisely seated for accurate margin trimming and waxing.
  • Manage the complete workflow for clear aligner cases, from pouring and finishing initial models to duplicating and preparing them for thermoforming.
  • Duplicate models using hydrocolloid or silicone duplicating materials for creating refractory models or secondary working casts.
  • Articulate and set denture teeth in wax for try-in appointments, following established occlusal schemes and aesthetic guidelines provided by the dentist.
  • Ensure all outgoing models and articulated cases meet the lab's stringent quality standards for accuracy, finish, and presentation before moving to the next department.
  • Maintain all model room equipment, including model trimmers, vacu-mixers, and vibrators, performing routine cleaning and calibration to ensure optimal performance.
  • Box and prepare impressions for pouring to ensure proper base form and land area, preserving all critical vestibular and anatomical details.
  • Adhere strictly to all OSHA safety guidelines and infection control protocols, including proper handling and disinfection of incoming clinical materials.
  • Manage inventory of plasters, stones, and other model room supplies, communicating restocking needs to the purchasing manager to avoid production delays.
  • Troubleshoot common issues with models, such as fractures, chips, or inaccuracies, and determine the best course of action for correction or remake.
  • Label and organize cases with extreme care, ensuring every model is clearly identified with the correct patient and case number to prevent mix-ups.
  • Collaborate directly with dentists or their assistants via phone or email to clarify instructions and resolve any issues related to impression quality.
  • Document all work performed in the lab's case management system, tracking the progress of each case through the model department.

  • Maintain a meticulously clean and organized plaster room, ensuring all equipment is properly calibrated and materials are consistently stocked.
  • Assist senior technicians and the digital design team with scanning physical impressions and models for integration into CAD/CAM workflows.

  • Participate in team meetings to discuss workflow improvements, new materials, and techniques to enhance overall lab efficiency and quality.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Certified Dental Technician (CDT) designation is a significant advantage.
