Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate, monitor, and control the entire incineration system, including feeders, combustion chambers, boilers, and ash removal systems, primarily through a Distributed Control System (DCS) or PLC interface.
  • Continuously monitor all operational parameters, such as temperatures, pressures, feed rates, and emissions data, making necessary adjustments to maintain optimal and compliant performance.
  • Conduct routine and preventative maintenance on a wide array of mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps, motors, fans, conveyors, burners, and instrumentation.
  • Systematically troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve operational, mechanical, and electrical issues to minimize downtime and ensure process integrity.
  • Perform regular inspections and maintenance of the refractory lining within the combustion chambers to identify wear, prevent failures, and schedule repairs.
  • Manage the proper handling, processing, and disposal of both bottom ash and fly ash in strict accordance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Operate heavy machinery, such as forklifts, front-end loaders, and skid steers, to manage the flow of waste materials to the feed system and to handle ash and other process residuals.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the air pollution control (APC) system, including scrubbers, baghouses, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) units, and reagent injection systems (e.g., lime, carbon).
  • Adhere rigorously to all facility safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, and the correct use of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate operational logs, maintenance work orders, emissions data, and other compliance-related documentation in a timely and legible manner.
  • Respond swiftly and effectively to system alarms and emergency situations, following established procedures to secure the equipment and protect personnel and the environment.
  • Calibrate and perform functional checks on process instrumentation and monitoring equipment to ensure their accuracy and reliability.
  • Execute minor repairs involving welding, pipefitting, and basic electrical work to address immediate equipment needs.
  • Collect and prepare process samples of waste, ash, scrubber water, and other materials for laboratory analysis as required for process control and compliance verification.
  • Support engineering projects related to equipment upgrades, process modifications, and system installations by providing operational insight and hands-on assistance.
  • Ensure a high level of housekeeping is maintained in the control room, on the tipping floor, and throughout the entire incinerator plant area.
  • Coordinate with waste receiving personnel and scale house operators to ensure a consistent and appropriate supply of waste material for processing.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspections on safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, emergency showers, eyewash stations, and alarm systems.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all required training, including 40-hour HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT, and ongoing refresher courses.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior technicians, sharing knowledge of standard operating procedures, safety practices, and troubleshooting techniques.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the inventory management of critical spare parts, consumable supplies (like reagents and lubricants), and necessary tools to ensure operational readiness.
  • Contribute actively to the plant's safety committee, participating in safety audits, incident investigations, and the development of improved safety procedures.
  • Act as a point of contact during regulatory inspections, providing operational records and explaining process controls to agency representatives as needed.
  • Support and champion plant-wide continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing efficiency, enhancing safety, and reducing operational costs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • PLC/DCS Operation: Proficiency in monitoring and operating complex industrial equipment via Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) or Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to diagnose and repair mechanical systems, including pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Electrical Troubleshooting: Skill in troubleshooting electrical systems up to 480V, reading electrical schematics, and understanding motor controls.
  • Combustion Principles: Solid understanding of the principles of thermal combustion, heat transfer, and airflow management.
  • Instrumentation & Control: Experience with calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining industrial process instruments (e.g., pressure, temperature, flow, level sensors).
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Certified or certifiable to safely operate forklifts, loaders, and other mobile equipment.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with key environmental regulations, particularly EPA, RCRA, and Clean Air Act requirements relevant to incineration.
  • Preventative Maintenance (PM): Experience using and documenting work within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • LOTO Procedures: In-depth knowledge and proven application of Lock-Out/Tag-Out safety procedures for energy isolation.
  • Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), mechanical blueprints, and electrical one-line diagrams.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or certificate from a vocational/technical school program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in an industrial environment such as a power plant, chemical plant, manufacturing facility, or waste treatment plant.

  • Direct experience operating medical, hazardous, or municipal waste-to-energy incinerators.
  • Possession of a state-issued Boiler Operator, Steam Engineer, or Stationary Engineer license/certification.
  • Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with an 8-hour annual refresher.
  • Proven experience working with Air Pollution Control (APC) equipment.
