Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Warmly and graciously welcome all guests upon their arrival, escorting them to their tables and presenting menus in a professional manner.
  • Provide an immersive introduction to the menu, expertly explaining the nuances of regional Indian dishes, key ingredients, preparation methods (e.g., Tandoori, Dum Pukht), and spice levels.
  • Actively listen to guests' preferences and dietary restrictions to provide personalized, thoughtful recommendations for food and beverage pairings.
  • Confidently answer guest inquiries regarding menu items, including a detailed understanding of potential allergens such as nuts, dairy, and gluten.
  • Accurately take and record food and beverage orders using a Point of Sale (POS) system, ensuring complete clarity for the kitchen and bar staff.
  • Diligently communicate any special requests, modifications, or severe allergy information to the culinary team to ensure guest safety and satisfaction.
  • Serve dishes and beverages with precision and elegance, following established service sequences and standards of etiquette.
  • Describe each dish as it is served to the table, enhancing the dining experience by sharing a brief story or key feature of the preparation.

  • Ensure the timely delivery of each course, coordinating with the kitchen expo and other servers to manage the flow of service.
  • Perform quality checks after each course is served to ensure guests are completely satisfied with their meal and address any concerns immediately and professionally.
  • Expertly handle and serve beverages, including knowledge of wines that pair well with spicy and complex Indian flavors, as well as traditional drinks like Lassi and Masala Chai.
  • Process guest payments accurately and efficiently, handling cash, credit cards, and gift cards with integrity and attention to detail.
  • Cultivate a loyal clientele by building rapport with guests, remembering repeat customers and their preferences to provide a personalized experience.
  • Gracefully manage challenging situations, such as guest complaints or service delays, with a calm and solution-oriented approach.
  • Uphold the aesthetic of the dining room by ensuring tables are properly set, clean, and well-maintained throughout the service period.
  • Upsell and cross-sell menu items, including appetizers, desserts, and specialty beverages, in a way that genuinely enhances the guest's meal.
  • Present the dessert menu and offer after-dinner drinks or coffee, providing a memorable conclusion to the dining experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the comprehensive setup of the dining area before service, including polishing silverware and glassware, folding napkins, and arranging table settings.
  • Contribute to the breakdown and cleaning of the dining room and service stations at the end of a shift, ensuring the space is ready for the next service.
  • Restock server stations with necessary supplies, such as linens, condiments, plates, and cutlery, both during and after service.
  • Provide support to fellow team members, such as bussers and hosts, during peak hours to ensure a smooth and efficient overall operation.
  • Participate in pre-shift meetings and ongoing training sessions to stay updated on menu changes, daily specials, and service standards.
  • Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, and alcohol service regulations, maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep Knowledge of Indian Cuisine: Comprehensive understanding of regional dishes, spice profiles, cooking methods (Tandoor, Kadhai, etc.), and terminology.
  • POS System Proficiency: Experience operating Point of Sale systems (e.g., Toast, Aloha, Square) for order entry and payment processing.
  • Food and Wine Pairing: Ability to recommend wines and other beverages that complement the complex and diverse flavors of Indian food.
  • Allergen Awareness: Strong knowledge of common food allergens and the ability to guide guests with dietary restrictions safely.
  • Food Handler Certification: Possession of a valid food safety certification as required by local health department regulations.
