Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive first article, in-process, and final inspections on induction heat-treated components to verify 100% conformance to all engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Utilize a wide array of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, profilometers, and various bore gauges, to conduct detailed dimensional analysis.
  • Execute Rockwell hardness testing on part surfaces and prepared cross-sections to ensure components meet specified hardness ranges and gradient requirements.
  • Meticulously prepare metallurgical samples by sectioning, mounting, grinding, and polishing specimens for microscopic examination fatores such as case depth, microstructure, and grain size.
  • Conduct Nital Etch or other temper etch inspection procedures to expertly detect grinding burns, re-hardening, decarburization, or other thermal processing defects.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications, demonstrating a strong command of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain all inspection equipment and metallurgical laboratory apparatus to ensure the accuracy, precision, and repeatability of measurements.
  • Diligently and accurately document all inspection results, test data, and qualitative findings in quality logs, ERP systems, and formal inspection reports.
  • Systematically identify, tag, and segregate non-conforming products, and initiate detailed Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) in accordance with company and industry procedures.
  • Collaborate proactively with Production, Engineering, and Materials teams to investigate the root cause of defects and participate in developing effective Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs).
  • Verify and audit induction hardening machine parameters, process travelers, and operational documentation to ensure strict alignment with the approved manufacturing plan.
  • Conduct thorough visual inspections under various lighting conditions to identify surface imperfections such as cracks, pitting, quench failures, or other discontinuities.
  • Operate and interpret results from Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) equipment, such as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), to detect surface and near-surface flaws.
  • Evaluate the microstructure of heat-treated materials against established photographic standards and specifications to confirm that the proper metallurgical transformation has occurred.
  • Perform destructive testing as required by the quality plan to validate the integrity of the induction hardening process on lot samples or sacrificial test pieces.
  • Review and approve supplier and outside processor certifications, ensuring all required documentation and test results comply with purchasing and engineering requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the Quality Engineering team by collecting and organizing data for Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts and process capability studies.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of inspection methods, work instructions, and quality control procedures to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with the Materials Review Board (MRB) by providing detailed data, samples, and technical insights to aid in the disposition of non-conforming material.
  • Participate actively in department meetings, safety briefings, and Kaizen events to drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement across the organization.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior inspectors and production operators on critical quality standards, inspection techniques, and the proper use of gauging.
  • Support internal, customer, and third-party audits (e.g., NADCAP, AS9100) by retrieving records, demonstrating procedures, and answering technical questions.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety regulations, champion 5S/6S principles to maintain a clean and organized work station, and utilize all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Deep understanding of complex engineering drawings and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols.
  • Hardness Testing: Proficiency with Rockwell and/or microhardness testing equipment and standards.
  • Metallurgical Sample Preparation: Skilled in cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching metallic specimens.
  • Microscopy & Microstructure Analysis: Ability to analyze metal microstructures for case depth, grain structure, and phase transformation.

  • Computer Proficiency: Competence in using MS Office and ERP/MRP systems for data entry and reporting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a certificate from a technical/vocational program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience in a quality inspection role within a manufacturing, heat treat, or aerospace environment.

Preferred: Direct experience as an inspector in a NADCAP-accredited heat treatment facility is highly valued. Experience with a variety of part geometries and materials is a significant plus.
