Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive industrial hygiene programs and policies to ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
  • Conduct detailed qualitative and quantitative exposure assessments for chemical, physical, and biological agents, including airborne contaminants, noise, radiation, and thermal stress.
  • Perform scientific monitoring and sampling of potential workplace hazards using a wide range of industrial hygiene instrumentation and media, ensuring proper calibration and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Interpret complex sampling data, compare results against Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) like OSHA PELs and ACGIH TLVs, and prepare detailed technical reports with actionable findings and recommendations.
  • Develop and implement effective hazard control strategies using the hierarchy of controls, with a focus on engineering controls (e.g., ventilation) and administrative controls before relying on personal protective equipment.
  • Lead the selection, implementation, and management of the company's Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program, including hazard assessments, selection, fit-testing, and employee training.
  • Manage and serve as the technical expert for specific health and safety programs such as Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Hazard Communication, and Chemical Hygiene.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments of workstations, tools, and manufacturing processes to identify risks for musculoskeletal disorders and recommend practical solutions for risk reduction.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and support to management, engineering, and operational teams on all matters related to industrial hygiene and occupational health.
  • Develop and deliver engaging and effective industrial hygiene training for employees at all levels, covering topics like chemical safety, hazard recognition, and proper PPE use.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact and subject matter expert during regulatory inspections from agencies like OSHA, providing documentation and demonstrating program effectiveness.
  • Investigate employee health concerns and potential occupational illnesses, conducting thorough root cause analyses to implement robust corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain meticulous and audit-ready records of all exposure monitoring data, training sessions, medical surveillance programs, and equipment calibrations in an organized database.
  • Evaluate the introduction of new chemicals, materials, and processes by conducting a thorough risk assessment to identify and mitigate potential health hazards before implementation.
  • Review and approve Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manage the facility's chemical inventory and Hazard Communication program to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Oversee the facility's industrial ventilation systems, conducting periodic evaluations to ensure they are designed and operating effectively to control airborne contaminants.
  • Manage relationships with third-party consultants and analytical laboratories, ensuring high quality of service, proper accreditation, and timely delivery of results.
  • Prepare and manage the industrial hygiene program budget, including forecasting needs for new equipment, sampling media, lab analysis, and external services.
  • Participate in and/or lead incident investigation teams, focusing on the occupational health aspects of incidents and near misses to prevent recurrence.
  • Author, review, and update corporate and site-specific industrial hygiene standards, procedures, and guidance documents to reflect best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Conduct comprehensive audits of industrial hygiene programs at various company sites to ensure consistent implementation and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Actively participate in site-level safety committees, providing expert input on health-related topics and exposure control strategies.
  • Collaborate with occupational health nurses and physicians on the design and implementation of medical surveillance programs based on exposure risks.
  • Assist in the development and execution of emergency response plans, particularly for scenarios involving chemical releases or other hazardous material exposures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in operating and calibrating a wide range of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment (e.g., noise dosimeters, air sampling pumps, direct-read instruments).
  • Deep knowledge of federal, state, and local health and safety regulations (OSHA, MSHA, EPA, etc.) and consensus standards (ACGIH, ANSI, NFPA).
  • Expertise in exposure assessment strategies and statistical data analysis for interpreting sampling results and determining exposure profiles.
  • Strong understanding of toxicology and the health effects associated with chemical, physical, and biological agents.
  • Competency in managing comprehensive safety programs such as Respiratory Protection (including qualitative/quantitative fit-testing), Hearing Conservation, and Hazard Communication.

  • Proficiency in using industrial hygiene software for data management, analysis, and reporting (e.g., Medgate/Cority, VelocityEHS).
  • Experience conducting ergonomic risk assessments using established methodologies (e.g., RULA, REBA, NIOSH Lifting Equation).
  • Familiarity with laboratory analytical methods and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures for sample submission.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and translate complex technical documents, such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and toxicological studies, into practical workplace guidance.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, or a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) is highly desirable and often required for senior roles.
