Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and PLC-controlled production equipment—including conveyors, pumps, compressors, motors, gearboxes, mixers, and packaging lines—using schematic interpretation and systematic troubleshooting to restore production quickly and safely.
  • Execute preventive maintenance schedules and procedures in accordance with the CMMS, performing inspections, lubrication, alignment, belt/tension checks, gasket and seal replacement, and component adjustments to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Perform root cause analysis on repeat failures, document corrective actions, and implement improvements (parts modification, procedures, and training) to increase mean time between failures (MTBF).
  • Troubleshoot and repair motor control systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), starters, relays, contactors, and circuit protection devices; coordinate with electricians for high-voltage work and motor rewinding as required.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and maintain PLCs, HMIs and related automation components (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Rockwell or similar), including ladder logic diagnostics, I/O checks, and firmware updates under change control.
  • Conduct electrical troubleshooting with meters, clamp meters, insulation testers, and oscilloscopes to trace faults, identify open/short circuits, ground issues, and to verify power quality and control signals.
  • Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot instrumentation and process controls (pressure, temperature, flow transmitters) to ensure accurate measurement and control of process variables.
  • Perform bearing changes, shaft alignments, coupling installations, vibration checks, and dynamic balancing to ensure rotating equipment reliability and minimize noise and heat generation.
  • Execute planned plant shutdowns and turnarounds: disassemble and reassemble equipment, replace wear parts, conduct system testing, and validate start-up sequences to meet schedule and safety targets.
  • Install, commission and test new equipment and production lines, collaborating with vendors and engineering to ensure correct mechanical, electrical and control integration.
  • Carry out welding, brazing and basic fabrication to repair equipment frames, guards, chutes and mounts as needed, following welding procedure specifications and quality requirements.
  • Use infrared thermography, ultrasonic testing and vibration analysis as part of a predictive maintenance program to detect early-stage electrical connections, bearing defects, and mechanical looseness.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, drawings, BOMs, and maintenance logs in the CMMS/ERP and produce clear work orders, failure reports and parts requisitions for procurement.
  • Manage spare parts inventory: identify critical spares, inspect incoming parts, issue and replenish stock, and control costs through vendor negotiations and obsolescence planning.
  • Apply lockout/tagout (LOTO) and other safety protocols for energy isolation on mechanical and electrical systems, report unsafe conditions, and participate in safety incident investigations and corrective actions.
  • Support continuous improvement and lean initiatives (5S, Kaizen) by identifying waste, improving maintenance workflows, reducing changeover times and standardizing procedures.
  • Train operators and junior maintenance staff on basic equipment care, safe work practices, start-up/shutdown procedures and minor troubleshooting to reduce reliance on emergency repairs.
  • Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, warranty work and major component replacements, overseeing work quality, schedules and compliance with site safety rules.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and after-hours calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule; triage issues, implement temporary fixes and execute permanent repairs to restore production.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations (OSHA, NFPA 70E) and company standards when working in confined spaces, at heights, and with hazardous materials and energized equipment.
  • Perform electrical panel and control cabinet wire management, labeling, and schematic updates to maintain clear documentation and reduce troubleshooting time for future failures.

Secondary Functions

  • Support engineering and production in equipment modification projects, pilot runs, and process changeovers to ensure maintainability and reliability are designed in.
  • Contribute maintenance input to capital expenditure requests and feasibility studies by estimating labor, parts and lifecycle maintenance costs.
  • Lead or participate in reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) meetings and cross-functional problem solving sessions (Fishbone, 5 Whys) to reduce chronic failures.
  • Assist purchasing with vendor qualification and parts standardization efforts to simplify stocking and decrease lead times for critical components.
  • Audit maintenance procedures and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintenance checklists and training materials to reflect best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Provide technical support for quality teams when equipment issues impact product specifications, assisting with root cause and containment actions.
  • Support energy efficiency projects by recommending motor upgrades, VFD tuning, and mechanical system improvements that reduce consumption and operating costs.
  • Participate in apprenticeship programs and mentor new hires, documenting on-the-job training and competency assessments.
  • Gather and analyze basic maintenance KPIs (MTTR, MTBF, uptime, wrench time) to support continuous improvement and management reporting.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Electrical troubleshooting up to motor control voltage levels; understanding of three-phase power, transformers and circuit protection.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; technical high school or trade school coursework preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Mechatronics or related field.
  • Vocational certifications in electrical, mechanical, hydronics, or instrumentation.
