Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate various industrial sewing machines, including single-needle, double-needle, walking-foot, and sergers, to assemble components.
- Read and accurately interpret work orders, technical sheets, and patterns to determine project specifications and material requirements.
- Position, align, and guide fabric pieces through the machine, meticulously following seams, edges, and other guide marks.
- Execute complex sewing operations such as topstitching, edge stitching, and joining multiple layers of heavy-duty materials.
- Consistently monitor and maintain stitch quality, thread tension, and seam allowances to meet strict company and client standards.
- Meet daily and weekly production quotas while upholding the highest standards of quality, craftsmanship, and safety.
- Inspect finished products for defects, ensuring they conform to patterns and quality specifications before moving to the next production stage.
- Attach necessary hardware, including zippers, buckles, webbing, and grommets, using specialized sewing techniques or equipment.
- Work expertly with a variety of industrial-grade materials such as canvas, vinyl, leather, Sunbrella, and other technical textiles.
- Select the appropriate thread, needles, and machine settings based on the specific fabric type and project requirements.
- Measure, cut, and mark materials using rulers, templates, and marking tools to ensure precise and efficient assembly.
- Efficiently manage individual workload and workflow to minimize material waste and maximize productivity.
- Troubleshoot minor sewing machine problems, such as thread breaks or tension issues, to reduce downtime and maintain production flow.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding production issues, material shortages, or equipment failures.
- Perform repairs or alterations on finished goods or returned products as directed by the Quality Control department.
Secondary Functions
- Perform routine and preventative machine maintenance, including cleaning, oiling, and changing needles, bobbins, and presser feet.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of new sewing machine operators on equipment, techniques, and production standards.
- Help maintain inventory of sewing supplies such as thread, needles, and bobbins, and report shortages to the supervisor.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to all company safety protocols and procedures.
- Collaborate with the cutting and pattern-making teams to provide feedback on material yields and construction efficiency.
