Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct routine surveillance and observation rounds throughout the facility to monitor compliance with infection control policies, including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and environmental cleaning.
  • Meticulously collect, compile, and enter surveillance data into infection control databases and software systems, such as the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Perform direct observational audits of clinical practices and processes, providing real-time feedback and education to staff when teachable moments arise.
  • Assist in the investigation of potential communicable disease exposures and outbreaks by gathering patient data, creating line lists, and helping to establish timelines.
  • Carry out environmental inspections and rounds in patient care areas, surgical suites, and sterile processing departments to assess the cleanliness and integrity of the physical environment.
  • Collect environmental and biological samples for laboratory analysis as directed, such as water samples for Legionella testing or surface swabs for contamination checks, while adhering to strict collection protocols.
  • Generate routine and ad-hoc reports from surveillance data, summarizing findings on infection rates, compliance trends, and audit results for departmental and committee review.
  • Support the management of patients under isolation precautions by verifying appropriate signage, PPE availability, and staff adherence to protocols.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of educational materials and training sessions for new hires and current staff on fundamental infection prevention topics.
  • Monitor sterilization and disinfection processes, including reviewing logs and observing techniques in areas like the Sterile Processing Department and Endoscopy.
  • Maintain and manage the inventory of infection control-related supplies, educational materials, and outbreak investigation kits.
  • Review patient charts and electronic health records to identify potential healthcare-associated infections based on established criteria and definitions.
  • Assist in preparing for regulatory surveys and accreditation visits (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS) by helping to gather documentation and ensuring departmental readiness.
  • Serve as a visible and approachable resource for frontline staff, answering their day-to-day questions regarding infection control practices and policies.
  • Track and trend data related to sharps injuries and other bloodborne pathogen exposures, contributing to prevention and follow-up initiatives.
  • Observe construction and renovation projects to ensure proper implementation of Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) measures, such as dust containment and traffic control.
  • Participate in product evaluation trials for new disinfectants, medical devices, or PPE to assess their effectiveness and usability from an infection control perspective.
  • Help maintain and update the organization's Infection Control Manual and related policies under the supervision of the Infection Preventionist.
  • Analyze hand hygiene compliance data from electronic monitoring systems or direct observation, and prepare summary reports for unit managers.
  • Collaborate with the Employee Health department to track communicable disease exposures among staff and assist with follow-up activities as needed.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
