Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the design, configuration, and optimization of nursing workflows within the EHR (Epic, Cerner, Meditech or other), ensuring clinical documentation, order entry, and care plans align with evidence-based practice, regulatory requirements, and nursing standards.
  • Serve as the primary clinical subject matter expert (SME) for clinical decision support (CDS) development—authoring, validating, and monitoring alerts, best practice advisories, order sets, and documentation templates to reduce alert fatigue and improve patient outcomes.
  • Participate in end-to-end EHR implementation and upgrade projects: gather clinical requirements, map current-state workflows, develop build specifications, test configurations (unit, integration, and user acceptance testing), and support go-live activities including hypercare.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (physicians, pharmacists, IT, quality, revenue cycle) to translate clinical problems into technical solutions, balancing patient safety, usability, and regulatory/operational constraints.
  • Perform clinical workflow analyses using direct observation, time-motion studies, and process mapping to identify inefficiencies, safety risks, and opportunities for automation or redesign.
  • Use data analytics and reporting tools (SQL, Power BI, Tableau, vendor reporting modules) to extract, analyze, and visualize clinical data for quality improvement, compliance tracking, and executive reporting.
  • Lead staff education and change management initiatives: develop role-specific training materials, conduct classroom and one-on-one sessions, produce end-user job aids, and measure competency post-training.
  • Maintain governance and oversight for clinical build requests—triage intake, prioritize based on clinical impact, manage change control tickets, and document decision rationales and rollback plans.
  • Validate clinical content and build with frontline nurses and clinicians through alpha/beta testing and continuous feedback loops to ensure solutions support patient-centered care and clinician efficiency.
  • Monitor system performance and safety by reviewing dashboards, error reports, and incident logs; partner with IT and vendor support to remediate defects and optimize uptime.
  • Lead or support clinical data migration and reconciliation activities—ensure data integrity, continuity of care, and correct mapping of discrete clinical elements during transitions between systems or upgrades.
  • Advocate for nursing representation in enterprise IT and clinical informatics committees to ensure nursing perspectives are incorporated into vendor selection, project prioritization, and strategic roadmaps.
  • Develop, maintain, and standardize clinical documentation templates and nomenclature (nursing assessments, care plans, flowsheets) to improve interoperability, coding accuracy (ICD-10), and billing integrity.
  • Implement and evaluate interventions that leverage interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR) to improve data exchange with external systems, devices, registries, and HIEs.
  • Conduct post-implementation evaluation and continuous improvement cycles: collect metrics (quality, safety, efficiency), analyze outcomes, and iterate configuration to close performance gaps.
  • Partner with clinical quality, infection control, and compliance teams to ensure EHR workflows support regulatory reporting, accreditation standards, and population health initiatives.
  • Provide on-call or rotational support during critical go-lives or system incidents, coordinating clinical workarounds and communicating timely updates to stakeholders.
  • Mentor and coach junior informatics staff and clinical superusers, building bench strength in the organization’s nursing informatics capability.
  • Manage vendor relationships for clinical applications; coordinate vendor-supported configuration, testing, and upgrades while ensuring contractual deliverables meet clinical needs.
  • Design and implement nursing-focused analytics projects—identify outcome measures, create cohorts, run statistical analyses, and translate findings into operational recommendations.
  • Engage end-users proactively to solicit feedback, capture feature requests, and prioritize small-scope enhancements that yield high clinical value.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Master’s degree (MSN, MHI, MPH, or MS in Health Informatics/Clinical Informatics) or certification in Nursing Informatics (ANCC Informatics Nursing Certification) or related credential (HIMSS CPHIMS, Epic certification).
