Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Translate complex quantitative and qualitative data into clear, accurate, and actionable visualizations (charts, maps, timelines, network diagrams) that communicate key insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Design and maintain high-fidelity dashboards and interactive data products using best practices in information hierarchy, interactivity, and performance optimization.
- Lead the end-to-end production of infographics and explainers — from scoping and storyboarding to design, copy edits, and final delivery for web and print.
- Conduct user research, stakeholder interviews, and usability testing focused on how audiences interpret and act on information, then iterate designs based on findings.
- Create and document information architecture, content models, and taxonomies to ensure consistent structure and discoverability across products and documentation.
- Produce accessible visuals and templates adhering to WCAG guidelines (color contrast, screen-reader semantics, keyboard navigation) and promote accessibility across teams.
- Design and develop reusable visualization components and pattern libraries (React/Vue components or static design tokens) to scale information design across products.
- Work closely with data engineers and analysts to validate data sources, ensure correct data interpretation, and build efficient pipelines for visualization consumption.
- Translate technical and policy content into plain-language copy and annotated visuals that reduce cognitive load and improve comprehension for diverse audiences.
- Create prototypes (interactive or coded) to validate interaction patterns, microcopy, and onboarding flows for data-heavy experiences prior to implementation.
- Establish and maintain visual style guides for typography, color, iconography, data encoding, and chart usage to ensure consistent brand and information integrity.
- Collaborate with product managers to scope features, define success metrics (engagement, comprehension, task completion), and prioritize information design work in roadmaps.
- Train and mentor designers, analysts, and content creators in information design principles, chart literacy, and data storytelling best practices.
- Prepare presentation-ready materials and brief executives and stakeholders on insights and visualization approaches, articulating trade-offs and design rationale.
- Audit existing content and visualizations to identify misinformation risks, outdated figures, or misleading representations, and propose remediation plans.
- Implement localization and internationalization best practices in visuals and copy to ensure global audiences receive culturally appropriate and accurate information.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, illustrators, and visualization specialists for large-scale reports or campaigns requiring bespoke assets.
- Optimize visual assets and interactions for web performance and cross-device responsiveness, ensuring fast load times and consistent behavior on mobile and desktop.
- Lead workshops and collaborative sketching sessions (design sprints) to align cross-functional teams around visual narratives and data-driven product decisions.
- Produce technical documentation and delivery packages (SVGs, source files, data dictionaries, API endpoints) so engineering teams can integrate visuals reliably.
- Monitor analytics and user feedback to iterate on visualization designs, A/B test layout and interaction alternatives, and measure comprehension improvements.
- Advocate for ethical visualization practices, avoiding misleading encodings, cherry-picked scales, or omission biases, and integrate data quality checks in design reviews.
- Design specialized visuals such as process maps, decision trees, personas, and journey maps that support product strategy, onboarding, and policy communications.
- Coordinate release cycles and QA for visualization features, including cross-browser checks, accessibility audits, and edge-case testing for unusual datasets.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
- Provide guidance on metadata, labeling, and documentation standards to improve discoverability of data assets.
- Assist marketing and communications teams with campaign creatives that require accurate data portrayal and visual consistency.
- Help define SLAs for visualization updates and maintenance tied to business reporting cycles.
