Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct scheduled and ad-hoc infrared thermographic surveys of electrical systems (switchgear, MCCs, transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, lighting panels) to identify hot spots, loose connections, overloads, and insulation failures; document findings with radiometric thermal imagery and high-resolution visual images and deliver actionable recommendations to maintenance teams.

  • Execute building and facility diagnostics using infrared cameras to identify building envelope heat loss, air infiltration, moisture intrusion, missing insulation, HVAC imbalances and solar gain issues; produce energy-saving recommendations and cost/benefit analyses for retrofit projects.
  • Plan and implement thermal imaging surveys for rooftop photovoltaic (PV) arrays and solar farms, identifying module defects, hot spots, diode failures and string-level anomalies; correlate infrared data with electrical performance and SCADA logs to support warranty claims and maintenance scheduling.
  • Carry out UAV/drone-mounted thermal surveys for roof inspections, solar farm inspections, pipeline and right-of-way monitoring; ensure compliance with aviation regulations, coordinate flight plans, and integrate thermal orthomosaics with GIS layers.

  • Train internal teams, technicians and clients on thermal imaging best practices, safety protocols, correct camera operation, on-site setup, and basic interpretation of thermal images to build organizational thermography capability.
  • Integrate infrared inspection results with condition monitoring platforms (CMMS/Maximo/PI/AWS) and predictive analytics workflows to enable automated alerts, maintenance work order generation, and trend analysis for fleet-wide asset health.
  • Conduct laboratory and R&D thermal testing including component-level IR characterization, thermal cycling/soak tests and emissivity measurement for product development, quality control and failure analysis activities.
  • Perform satellite and airborne infrared remote sensing analyses (MWIR/LWIR/TIR) for environmental monitoring, land surface temperature mapping, thermal anomaly detection (fires, geothermal), and coordinate with GIS teams to ingest and visualize thermal datasets.
  • Execute thermal acceptance testing and commissioning for new installations (electrical rooms, mechanical systems, HVAC) to verify thermal performance against design specifications and handover documentation.

  • Manage client relationships and act as subject matter expert during client meetings, presenting technical findings in lay terms, advising on condition-based maintenance strategies and supporting capital expenditure justification.
  • Maintain detailed logs of site activities, image metadata, and chain-of-custody for forensic-level inspections and high-stakes diagnostics; prepare documentation for insurance, regulatory compliance or legal purposes.
  • Provide after-action support including re-inspection, verification of repairs, trend monitoring, and continuous improvement feedback loops to refine inspection frequencies and detection thresholds.
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of common thermal failure modes for different asset classes and publish standardized symptom-to-cause mapping and recommended remedial steps for technicians and engineers.
  • Collaborate with procurement and R&D teams to evaluate and recommend thermal imaging hardware, software tools, automation options (robotics, fixed thermal cameras) and sensor fusion strategies to scale thermography programs.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus vocational training/certification in infrared thermography, NDT, or a technical discipline; OR
  • Associate degree in Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, Electronics or related technical field with thermography certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Remote Sensing, or Environmental/Geospatial Sciences with supplemental thermography certification.
