🎯 Role Definition

An Injection Molder (Injection Molding Operator / Injection Molding Technician) is responsible for the safe setup, operation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of plastic injection molding processes to produce high‑quality manufactured parts. This role focuses on mold setup and changeover, machine parameter control, material handling, in-process quality inspection, documentation, preventive maintenance, and collaboration with engineering and quality teams to meet production, safety and quality targets. Ideal candidates are experienced with thermoplastic resins, molding machines (Haitian, Engel, Arburg, Boy, KraussMaffei, etc.), mold maintenance, SPC/GD&T basics, and lean manufacturing principles.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate, and start injection molding machines and auxiliary equipment (hoppers, dryers, chillers, conveyors, feeders) to meet work order specifications, ensuring proper machine parameter settings such as melt temperature, injection speed, hold pressure, cooling time and shot size.
  • Perform mold installation, alignment, and safe changeover procedures including mechanical, hydraulic and electrical connections; torque mold bolts to spec and verify ejector function prior to production.
  • Execute first-article and trial runs to validate mold performance; adjust process parameters to achieve dimensional tolerance, surface finish and cycle time targets; document setup and run conditions.
  • Monitor ongoing production for quality, dimensional conformance and defects (flash, short shot, burn marks, sink, warp); perform in-line inspections and immediate corrective actions to reduce scrap and rework.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and basic mold repair: clean vents, replace worn ejector pins, tighten platen bolts, change seals and perform minor bushing/ejector maintenance to maintain mold health and uptime.
  • Troubleshoot machine and process issues, including hydraulic/pneumatic faults, heater band failures, screw/barrel wear, and inconsistent shot weight; escalate complex failures to maintenance or engineering with detailed fault logs.
  • Control material handling and resin management: verify lot numbers, check moisture content, operate dryers and desiccant units, mix colorants and additives according to recipe, and stage material to minimize contamination and ensure traceability.
  • Perform color changeovers, purging procedures and maintain batch records; execute proper cold/hot runs to prevent contamination and color streaks.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, tolerances and GD&T callouts; measure parts using calipers, micrometers, height gauges and coordinate with quality for statistical sampling plans.
  • Execute SPC and quality control checks (AQL sampling, control charts) and record production data (OEE, cycle time, rejects, uptime) into MES, SAP, or paper records as required.
  • Follow and enforce all safety rules including lockout/tagout, LOTO, PPE usage, safe handling of hot parts and materials, and machine guarding; proactively report safety hazards and near misses.
  • Optimize cycletime and process stability by recommending parameter changes, mold modifications or tooling repairs to engineering, driving continuous improvement and cost reduction objectives.
  • Participate in root cause analysis (5 Why, FMEA) for recurring defects and implement corrective/preventive actions with cross-functional teams.
  • Perform mold setup documentation and changeover checklists, maintaining accurate tool/mold change logs and maintenance history for traceability.
  • Train and mentor junior operators and temporary staff on best practices for machine operation, part inspection, setup procedures and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and tooling teams for scheduled mold swaps, major mold repairs and planned downtime to minimize production disruption.
  • Maintain housekeeping and organization in the press area, ensuring molds, tools and spare parts are stored properly and work area is free of contaminants that affect part quality.
  • Ensure compliance with customer-specific requirements, ISO 9001 procedures, PPAP/First Article Inspection processes and any industry-specific standards applicable to production.
  • Support continuous improvement projects such as scrap reduction, cycle time reduction, and energy efficiency initiatives; collect baseline data and verify improvement results.
  • Communicate production status, quality issues and material shortages to shift leads, production planners and supervisors to maintain on‑time delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Perform end-of-shift handoffs with detailed notes on machine status, outstanding maintenance items, lot numbers, and quality abnormalities to ensure smooth transitions and accountability.
  • Maintain accurate tooling and machine setup documents, including shot weight, clamp tonnage, valve gate settings, and cycle programs for reproducible setups across shifts.
  • Handle special operations like overmolding, insert molding, multi-material molding, gas-assisted molding or micro molding when required; follow engineering instructions and process windows.
  • Ensure proper part packaging and labeling for shipment, following ESD-controlled packaging where required for electronic components molded in plastics.
  • Record scrap and rework in ERP/MRP systems, and support inventory reconciliation for molded parts, consumables and raw resin stock.
  • Assist engineering in mold qualification runs, resin qualification, and production readiness reviews for new part introductions.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by collecting production metrics and proposing experiments to optimize cycle time and reduce defects.
  • Assist quality and process engineering with data collection for capability studies, SPC charts and corrective action verification.
  • Collaborate with maintenance to prioritize preventive maintenance schedules and support larger repairs or retrofits as needed.
  • Cross-train on related production equipment (thermoforming, extrusion, assembly) to provide flexible coverage during peak periods.
  • Participate in safety committees and continuous training to remain current with best practices, new materials and machine upgrades.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation and setup of hydraulic and electric injection molding machines (brands such as Haitian, Engel, Arburg, Boy, KraussMaffei).
  • Mold setup, alignment and changeover expertise including mechanical fastening, coolant and hydraulics connections.
  • Strong knowledge of process parameters: melt temperature, dwell time, back pressure, hold/packing pressure, injection speed and cooling profiles.
  • Experience with material handling and resin processing: drying, hopper loaders, vacuum dryers, and preventing moisture-related defects.
  • Proficient measuring skills using calipers, micrometers, height gauges and basic CMM familiarity for first article inspection.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T and work orders.

  • Competence in purging and color change procedures, and handling color concentrates and masterbatches safely.
  • Basic preventive maintenance skills on molds and molding equipment; ability to perform routine cleaning, lubrication and minor repairs.
  • Knowledge of safety systems and LOTO (lockout/tagout) procedures.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP or MES systems (SAP, IQMS, Epicor) for production reporting and lot traceability.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing, 5S, Kaizen and continuous improvement methodologies in a production environment.
  • Ability to use torque tools, impact wrenches, and hand tools for mold and machine adjustments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED; vocational training or technical certificate preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing Technology, Plastics Engineering Technology, or equivalent technical certification.
  • Certifications in injection molding technology or plastics processing (e.g., SME Plastics Certifications) are a plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2–5+ years of hands-on injection molding operation and mold setup experience. (Entry roles may start at 1–2 years with strong mechanical aptitude.)

Preferred:

  • 3–7 years demonstrating advanced mold setup, troubleshooting, SPC usage and collaboration with quality/engineering to optimize production. Experience with specific machine brands (Arburg, Engel, Haitian, Boy) and ERP systems is highly preferred.
