Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare and accurately weigh raw pigments, resins, solvents, additives, and concentrates using established recipes and batch sheets to produce printing inks that meet specification and production schedules.
  • Perform precise color matching using spectrophotometers, densitometers, and visual assessment under standardized lighting to ensure each lot meets customer color tolerances and industry standards.
  • Adjust formulations for hue, tint strength, gloss, and opacity by incrementally adding pigments and additives, documenting all changes to maintain reproducible batch records and color libraries.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain mixing, dispersion, bead milling, three-roll mill, and high-shear homogenizing equipment to achieve required particle size, dispersion quality, and rheology for each ink type.
  • Test and measure viscosity, pH, density, tack, gloss, and drying time using viscometers, pH meters, and drying units; interpret test results and apply corrective actions to bring product into specification.
  • Execute small-scale lab trials to refine color recipes and process parameters prior to scale-up to production, documenting trial protocols, observations, and outcomes in technical reports.
  • Maintain detailed batch production records, work orders, and quality documentation in paper logs or electronic systems (ERP/MRP), ensuring traceability for each production run and compliance with internal policies.
  • Conduct stability, shelf-life, and performance testing (rub resistance, adhesion, wet rub, lightfastness) to verify long-term product performance and advise on product improvements.
  • Implement and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and ISO-compliant processes to ensure consistent, safe, and quality-driven ink production.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve process, formulation, or equipment discrepancies by analyzing root causes, implementing corrective actions, and communicating findings to production and quality teams.
  • Monitor and control environmental parameters (temperature, humidity) during mixing and storage to prevent formulation variability and ensure consistent curing and drying characteristics.
  • Prepare customer samples and prototypes, annotate technical specifications and color metrics, and work directly with customers or technical service teams to finalize approvals prior to commercial runs.
  • Manage inventory of pigments, resins, solvents, and additives, initiate reorder requests, rotate stock according to FIFO, and coordinate with purchasing to avoid production delays.
  • Ensure all materials are labeled correctly, including hazard communication and MSDS/ SDS availability; handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with local and federal regulations.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory and production instruments (spectrophotometer, viscometer, pH meters, scales) on scheduled intervals and record calibration data for audit readiness.
  • Support scale-up activities by translating lab-scale formulations into production-scale recipes, modifying process times, shear rates, and dispersant levels to maintain color and physical properties.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, Lean manufacturing, and Six Sigma projects to increase throughput, reduce waste, and improve batch-to-batch consistency.
  • Train and mentor junior blending staff and production operators on safe chemical handling, proper measuring techniques, equipment operation, and quality checkpoints to build bench strength in the blending team.
  • Review customer complaints and non-conforming material reports related to color or performance, perform root cause analysis, and execute corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate with regulatory and environmental teams to ensure VOC emissions, waste streams, and chemical reporting (EPA, local regs) remain within compliance limits and documentation is maintained.
  • Label, package, and stage finished ink products for shipment, coordinating with shipping and logistics to ensure correct product delivery and accompanying technical documentation.
  • Maintain clean and organized laboratory and production areas, ensuring containment of spills, immediate cleanup, and documentation of any incidents to preserve safety and product integrity.
  • Provide technical input into new product development projects, collaborating with R&D, marketing, and sales to convert customer needs into manufacturable formulations.
  • Record and communicate daily production yields, scrap rates, and downtime events to production planning and management to support capacity planning and performance metrics.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in maintaining and updating the company’s color libraries, databases, and digital recipe systems used by production and customer service teams.
  • Support cross-functional projects such as equipment upgrades, ERP implementations, and product line transitions by providing formulation and production expertise.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, provide process documentation, and implement audit findings to strengthen quality systems.
  • Generate technical summaries and production reports for management, highlighting trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for formulation or process optimization.
  • Coordinate with maintenance to plan preventive maintenance on blending and dispersion equipment to minimize unexpected downtime and maintain consistent production quality.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert during customer visits, plant tours, and sales demonstrations to explain blending processes, quality controls, and product capabilities.
  • Monitor industry trends in pigment technology, resin systems, and regulatory changes to recommend innovation or reformulation opportunities.
  • Support training initiatives and create or update SOPs, safety guidelines, and work instructions for new processes or materials.
  • Participate in sample exchanges and competitive benchmarking to ensure product quality remains aligned with market expectations and customer requirements.
  • Support ad-hoc technical requests from sales or customer service to provide quick-turn samples, color tolerancing advice, and technical clarifications.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced knowledge of color theory, colorants, pigment dispersion, and printing ink systems (solvent-based, water-based, UV-curable, flexo, gravure).
  • Proficient in spectrophotometer and densitometer operation, interpretation of ΔE, Lab*, and density metrics for color matching and QC.
  • Experience operating dispersion and milling equipment (bead mill, three-roll mill, high-shear mixers) and understanding how process parameters affect particle size and rheology.
  • Strong bench chemistry skills: precise weighing, dilution, titrations, pH control, and handling of concentrated pigment pastes and resins.
  • Familiarity with viscometers (Brookfield, rotational), rheometers, gloss meters, and other physical property test equipment.

  • Ability to carry out stability testing, accelerated aging studies, and interpret performance test data (adhesion, rub resistance, drying times).
  • Working knowledge of MSDS/SDS, hazard communication (GHS), PPE requirements, and handling protocols for hazardous chemicals.
  • Experience with quality systems such as ISO 9001, GMP, or industry standards for coatings and ink manufacturing.
  • Skilled in documenting batch records, SOPs, CAPA logs, and audit-ready compliance documentation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with formal hands-on training in laboratory procedures and chemical handling.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Printing Technology, Coatings Science, or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science is advantageous for R&D or senior blending roles.
