An Ink Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes printing ink systems and related chemistries across water‑based, solvent‑based, UV/EB, and inkjet platforms. This hands‑on R&D and process engineering role leads formulation development, pigment dispersion, rheology tuning, stability and printability testing, scale‑up to manufacturing, and cross‑functional technical support for manufacturing, quality, and customers. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead formulation and development of new ink systems (water‑based, solvent‑based, UV/EB, and inkjet) from concept through pilot production, ensuring target properties for color, gloss, viscosity, adhesion, and drying/cure are met for intended substrates and printing methods.
  • Design and execute formulation experiments and Design of Experiments (DOE) to optimize pigment loading, binder selection, solvent blends, additives, and rheology modifiers to meet product performance and cost targets.
  • Develop and supervise high‑energy dispersion processes (milling, bead mills, high‑shear mixing) and optimize milling parameters to achieve required pigment grind, particle size distribution and optical properties.
  • Perform comprehensive print trials across multiple print technologies (flexography, gravure, offset, digital/inkjet) to validate ink performance, transfer, laydown, dot gain, adhesion, and scuff/scratch resistance under realistic press conditions.
  • Characterize inks using analytical instrumentation (particle size analyzers, viscometers/rheometers, FTIR, GC, HPLC, UV‑Vis, ICP when applicable) and interpret data to drive formulation adjustments and root‑cause analysis.
  • Apply color science and color management techniques (CIE Lab*, Delta E, spectrophotometry, ICC profile considerations) to achieve and control metamerism, shade matching, and color stability across batches and substrates.
  • Lead scale‑up of new ink formulas from lab to pilot and full manufacturing scale, including process parameter transfer, equipment validation, sampling plans, and coordination with manufacturing engineering.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing, pressroom and customer field issues related to viscosity shifts, pigment settling, flocculation, drying/cure defects, blistering, adhesion failures, and press compatibility; implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Drive product quality and reliability by developing and maintaining robust test methods, stability protocols, shelf‑life criteria, and batch release specifications aligned with quality management systems (ISO, GMP).
  • Collaborate closely with suppliers to qualify pigments, resins, solvents and additives; evaluate alternative raw materials for performance, cost, and regulatory compliance (VOC reduction, REACH, TSCA).
  • Lead or contribute to cross‑functional New Product Development (NPD) programs, coordinating timelines, technical requirements, pilot trials, cost targets, and go‑to‑market readiness with marketing, sales, and manufacturing.
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation for formulations, batch records, safety data sheets (SDS/MSDS), processing instructions, and regulatory dossiers required for compliance and audits.
  • Implement sustainability initiatives such as low‑VOC and water‑based ink platforms, solvent recovery strategies, and lifecycle considerations to reduce environmental footprint and meet customer sustainability goals.
  • Use statistical process control (SPC) and data analysis to monitor critical process parameters and product attributes; present technical reports and KPIs to R&D and operations leadership.
  • Mentor and train production chemists, lab technicians, and application specialists on formulation best practices, safe handling of raw materials, and analytical testing protocols.
  • Assess and mitigate health, safety, and environmental risks associated with ink chemistry and production processes; enforce laboratory safety procedures and PPE usage.
  • Support commercialization and customer trials by providing technical guidance for press setup, ink‑to‑substrate compatibility, pre‑press considerations, and troubleshooting during trial runs.
  • Collaborate with packaging engineers and substrates specialists to evaluate ink–substrate interactions, barrier coatings, and post‑print lamination or varnish compatibility.
  • Conduct cost‑of‑goods analyses to identify formulation changes and raw material substitutions that reduce cost without sacrificing performance or shelf life.
  • Stay current with emerging printing technologies (digital inkjet, functional inks, conductive/functional coatings) and recommend strategic investments or pilots for future product platforms.
  • Lead warranty claim investigations: collect samples, run forensic analyses, liaise with customers, and recommend product revisions or process controls to minimize recurrence.
  • Coordinate with regulatory and environmental teams to ensure product compliance for global markets, including labeling, transport classification, and environmental reporting.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects leveraging Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to increase throughput, reduce variability, and improve first‑pass yield for ink manufacturing.
