- Measure and record ink physical properties (viscosity, tack, pH, solids content, specific gravity) using industry-standard tools (viscometers, rheometers, hydrometers) and adjust ink recipes or recommend adjustments to maintain target print performance.
- Conduct CIE Lab* and Delta E (ΔE) color evaluations on printed samples, compare readings to customer and internal tolerances, and provide detailed color reports and pass/fail recommendations.
- Execute and maintain color control procedures (G7, ISO 12647 workflows) including proof-to-press matching, gray balance checks, and tone value increase (TVI) adjustments to maintain visual consistency across multiple presses and shifts.
- Create and maintain master sample libraries, color swatches and pressroom control strips; ensure samples are traceable to job tickets, substrate lot numbers and ink batches to support root-cause investigations.
- Inspect substrates, coatings and varnishes for interaction effects with inks (absorption, strike-through, slip, blocking) and recommend substrate/ink/coating pairings or process changes to resolve printability issues.
- Troubleshoot print defects related to ink (mottling, setoff, scumming, ink starvation, color banding), lead root-cause analysis using 5 Whys/Fishbone, and implement corrective actions with press operators and maintenance teams.
- Calibrate, maintain and perform routine verification of color measurement instruments and QC lab equipment; schedule instrument calibrations, manage standardization procedures and log all maintenance and calibration activities.
- Monitor pressroom environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) and assess their impact on ink behavior and color consistency; advise on environmental controls or process adjustments for stable output.
- Validate new inks, pigments and formulations in a test lab environment: run test prints, evaluate adhesion, rub resistance, wet/dry rub, lightfastness and chemical resistance and document performance against specifications.
- Execute sample retention policies: archive representative press samples, raw data and measurement logs for customer queries, audits and continuous improvement activities.
- Maintain accurate QC documentation and job logs (paper or electronic QMS/MES): record measurement data, track non-conformances, create NCR reports and follow up until closure.
- Collaborate with prepress and color management teams to review proofs, digital color separations and ICC/CMYK profiles before press to reduce press-side corrections and shorten make-ready times.
- Support incoming raw material inspection: visually and instrumentally inspect incoming ink deliveries for color consistency, batch-to-batch variation and physical properties before release to the pressroom.
- Participate in pre-press and press-side make-ready meetings, advise on ink/water balance, anilox selection, doctor blade settings, and recommend press parameters for optimal print quality.
- Train and mentor press operators and junior QC staff on color measurement best practices, instrument use, interpretation of ΔE, and on-the-spot corrective measures for common ink-related issues.
- Lead or participate in color audits, customer color approvals, and supplier audits; prepare documentation and present findings to internal stakeholders and clients.
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives by analyzing SPC data, identifying process drift, and recommending standardized operating procedures to reduce variation and waste.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental and regulatory requirements for ink handling, storage and disposal (MSDS, hazardous materials handling, VOC controls); enforce PPE and safe work practices in the lab and pressroom.
- Manage ink inventory levels for QC/research use: coordinate with purchasing and production to ensure right ink batches are available and flagged for jobs requiring specific color matches or lot traceability.
- Provide technical support during customer site visits and print trials: explain color tolerances, measurement methodology and corrective actions taken to achieve specified results.
- Prepare detailed, SEO-optimized job and color performance reports for stakeholders, including visual proofs, measurement trends, SPC charts and recommendations for future runs.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc customer color inquiries and provide on-demand color verification and digital measurement records.
- Contribute to continuous improvement projects (6S/Kaizen) focused on reducing setup time, ink waste and color rejections.
- Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions and training materials for color control and ink testing.
- Collaborate with R&D and suppliers to trial new pigments, binder systems and additives and document findings for scale-up.
- Input QC measurement data into the company MES/QMS and assist data analysts with trend analysis for process capability studies.
- Participate in cross-functional problem solving with production planning, maintenance and purchasing to implement corrective actions and control plans.
- Assist in validating new press equipment or retrofit installations by executing color trials and acceptance testing.
- Help manage vendor relationships for instrument calibration, chemical safety compliance and ink supply quality.
- Review customer specifications and contract requirements to ensure all print jobs meet contractual color and performance requirements.
- Promote a culture of quality, safety and continuous learning by actively engaging in team meetings and sharing best practices.
