Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, calibrate, and operate printing presses (flexographic, rotary screen, gravure, offset) to meet production schedules, ensuring accurate plate/cylinder installation, web tensioning, and registration control for consistent print quality.
- Prepare, mix and adjust inks by following formulas and batch records, accurately measuring pigments, solvents, binders, and additives to achieve target color and viscosity specifications.
- Perform precise color matching using spectrophotometers, colorimeters, density meters, and production proofing methods to meet customer color standards (Pantone/Lab values) and maintain color consistency across runs.
- Monitor ink viscosity, tack, pH, and other chemical properties during production, making real-time adjustments to maintain printability, dot gain control, and adhesion on various substrates (film, paper, foil).
- Conduct press start-up and shut-down procedures, including purging ink systems, cleaning anilox rolls, doctor blades, screens, and squeegees to prevent contamination and ensure product quality.
- Execute routine and preventative maintenance on ink delivery systems, pumps, dampening systems, heaters, chillers, and associated press components, logging maintenance actions and coordinating repairs with maintenance teams.
- Troubleshoot press defects such as streaks, ghosting, set-off, mottling, color shift, banding, and registration errors by diagnosing root causes and implementing corrective actions to minimize downtime and waste.
- Load and change printing plates, cylinders, sleeves, and doctor blade holders, ensuring correct orientation, tensioning and securing to manufacturer and SOP specifications for repeatable production runs.
- Verify substrate compatibility, perform substrate tests (adhesion, rub resistance, ink transfer), and select appropriate primer and coating options to ensure finished product durability and performance.
- Maintain accurate production documentation including batch ink records, production logs, run tickets, lot traceability, ink lot numbers, and quality control checklists for regulatory compliance and customer audits.
- Conduct inline and end-of-run quality inspections, measuring color density, dot gain, gloss, registration, and print dimensions; isolate and reject defective material and document non-conformances.
- Manage ink inventory and supplies, reorder stock, rotate chemical lots, label containers with SDS compliance, and ensure availability of pigments, solvents, additives, and coatings to support continuous production.
- Follow environmental, health and safety protocols for handling, storing, transporting, and disposing of inks, solvents and hazardous waste, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to MSDS/SDS guidance.
- Optimize press run parameters—speed, anilox selection, impression, drying/curing settings (IR/UV/Hot Air)—to maximize throughput while maintaining print quality and minimizing substrate waste.
- Provide hands-on training and mentoring to junior pressroom staff and helpers on ink mixing, basic color theory, press operation, and safe handling of chemical materials to build team competence.
- Collaborate with prepress, production planning, and quality assurance to interpret customer specifications, proof approvals, and change requests, ensuring deliverables meet contract and artwork requirements.
- Conduct root cause analysis for recurring print issues and participate in continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Kaizen, SPC) to reduce waste, improve OEE, and standardize best practices across shifts.
- Operate and maintain curing systems (UV LED, mercury vapor) and drying ovens, adjusting dwell time and lamp intensity for optimal ink cure, adhesion, and scratch resistance on different materials.
- Perform emergency response actions for spills, leaks, and equipment malfunctions, following containment procedures and notifying supervisors, safety, and environmental teams as required.
- Execute color correction and final color proof sign-off processes for customer approvals, making controlled recipe adjustments and documenting approvals for production runs.
- Support packaging, slitting, rewinding, and finishing operations by ensuring print quality is maintained through subsequent converting processes and communicating defects to finishing teams.
- Participate in shift handovers by delivering comprehensive run reports, unresolved issues, and corrective actions to incoming operators to maintain continuity and reduce repeat defects.
- Maintain clean and organized pressroom workspaces, complying with 5S standards and improving accessibility to tools, spare parts, and cleaning supplies.
- Ensure compliance with company quality systems (ISO, G7, customer-specific standards) by following documented procedures, completing required records, and cooperating with internal and external audits.
Secondary Functions
- Assist production planners with scheduling input and run-time estimates based on ink changeover and setup complexity to improve throughput planning.
- Support product development and R&D teams during trials by sampling new ink formulations, substrates, and process settings and documenting results.
