🎯 Role Definition

The Input Inspector (also called Incoming Quality Inspector or Incoming Materials Inspector) is responsible for performing incoming inspection and verification of raw materials, components, subassemblies and purchased parts to ensure conformance to drawing, specification and purchase order requirements. The role focuses on visual and dimensional inspection, performing statistical sampling and first article/first piece inspections, documenting non-conformances, coordinating containment and corrective actions with suppliers and internal teams, and maintaining inspection records in ERP/QMS systems. The Input Inspector enforces quality standards (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, GMP where applicable), supports continuous improvement initiatives, and provides timely, accurate inspection data to manufacturing and supply chain stakeholders to prevent defective material from entering production.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough incoming inspection of raw materials, components, and subassemblies against engineering drawings, purchase order specifications, and approved sample criteria using visual checks, calibrated measuring tools, and inspection fixtures to ensure all inputs meet defined acceptance criteria prior to release to production.
  • Execute dimensional measurement activities using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, surface plates, and digital measuring devices and record results accurately in inspection forms and electronic systems to support traceability and process control.
  • Perform first article inspection (FAI) and first-piece verification when new parts or lot changes are received, generating detailed FAI reports and ensuring all critical dimensions and features meet the drawing tolerances and engineering requirements.
  • Apply statistical sampling plans (such as ANSI/ASQ Z1.4) and sampling tables to inspect lot-based deliveries and create sampling worksheets, ensuring inspection effort is proportionate to risk and supplier performance while balancing throughput needs.
  • Identify, document and segregate non-conforming materials immediately, generate accurate non-conformance reports (NCRs) or material deviation notices in the QMS/ERP, and initiate containment actions to prevent use in production until disposition is approved.
  • Lead supplier containment and corrective action activities by collecting inspection evidence, conducting root cause investigations (5 Whys, Fishbone), and validating supplier corrective action plans (SCAR) to prevent recurrence of defects at the source.
  • Use coordinate measuring machines (CMM) or automated optical inspection (AOI) where applicable to verify complex geometries and provide precision measurement data for engineering review and quality records.
  • Maintain and calibrate inspection gauges and tools by coordinating with the calibration team, performing pre-use checks, and removing out-of-tolerance instruments from service to support measurement integrity and equipment traceability.
  • Enter inspection results, lot disposition, and quality observations into SAP, Oracle, or other ERP/QMS platforms in a timely and accurate manner to ensure real-time visibility of incoming quality status and material release decisions.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive inspection documentation including lot inspection reports, incoming inspection logs, certificates of conformity (COC), supplier certificates of analysis (COA), and material traceability records required for audits and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing and Supplier Quality teams to review supplier documentation, certifications, and change notices and participate in supplier audits or incoming audit activities when supplier performance or documentation gaps are identified.
  • Monitor and analyze incoming inspection trends and metrics (e.g., PPM, defect type frequency, supplier scorecards) to identify systemic issues, recommend continuous improvement projects, and support cross-functional problem-solving workshops.
  • Train and coach production personnel and new inspectors on incoming inspection procedures, acceptance criteria, correct use of measuring instruments, and safe handling of materials to maintain consistent inspection quality across shifts.
  • Enforce product safety and regulatory requirements (e.g., RoHS, REACH, GMP, food safety where applicable) by verifying material declarations, labeling, and required documentation before materials enter the production environment.
  • Support lot traceability and quarantine management by labeling and tagging inspected lots, maintaining quarantine logs, and coordinating material disposition decisions with quality leadership and operations.
  • Verify packaging, labeling, and handling requirements of incoming shipments to reduce damage risk and ensure correct storage and FIFO rotation in inventory systems.
  • Participate in supplier development activities by providing detailed inspection data, defect samples, and technical feedback that enable suppliers to improve processes and product quality over time.
  • Execute controlled release testing and coordinate supplemental inspections or destructive testing with lab teams when incoming materials require chemical or metallurgical verification.
  • Support internal and external quality audits by preparing incoming inspection records, demonstrating compliance to inspection procedures, and implementing audit findings related to incoming material controls.
  • Maintain a safe, organized inspection area following 5S principles, enforce PPE and EHS requirements, and escalate safety or quality hazards identified during the incoming inspection process.
  • Communicate proactively with manufacturing planners and production supervisors about incoming material availability, inspection lead times, and expedited inspection requests to minimize production disruption.
  • Develop and revise incoming inspection checklists, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and acceptance criteria in collaboration with Quality Engineers to keep inspection practices current with design changes and regulatory updates.
  • Validate measurement systems (MSA) for critical inspection processes and participate in capability studies (Cpk, Ppk) to ensure measurement methods provide reliable data for quality decisions.
  • Coordinate with inventory and receiving teams to reconcile discrepancies between packing lists, bills of lading and received material counts, and raise supplier claims for incorrect or missing items.
  • Support cross-functional change control by reviewing supplier change notifications, assessing inspection plan impacts, and updating inspection criteria when part designs or suppliers change.

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to surface incoming quality trends and inform supplier performance reviews.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by recommending inspection data capture improvements and automation opportunities.

  • Provide periodic reports to Purchasing and Operations on supplier quality metrics, inspection backlog, and risk items requiring escalation.
  • Support deployment and validation of new inspection technologies (e.g., AOI, machine vision) by providing user requirements and participating in pilot testing.
  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) for incoming inspection during cross-functional product launches and new supplier onboarding.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Incoming Inspection & Receiving Inspection: proficiency in end-to-end incoming material verification workflows, lot acceptance and disposition.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical coursework in inspection, machining, or manufacturing processes; or equivalent hands-on experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or vocational certificate in quality technology, manufacturing engineering, metrology, or an industrial trade program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1–5 years of hands-on incoming inspection, dimensional measurement and quality control in a manufacturing or supply chain environment.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years as an Incoming Quality Inspector, Quality Technician or similar role with demonstrated use of measurement equipment, ERP/QMS systems and supplier interaction.
  • Prior experience in regulated industries (aerospace, automotive, medical device, food) or with ISO/IATF standards is highly desirable.
  • Experience with CMM/AOI, FAI/PPAP processes, and supplier corrective action processes is a strong plus.
