Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up, program, and operate laser engraving systems, rotary engravers, pantographs and CNC engraving machines to produce consistent, readable inscriptions on metals, glass, stone, wood and plastics in accordance with job tickets and customer specifications.
- Read, interpret and execute work orders, blueprints, technical drawings and customer-supplied artwork; translate layout instructions into precise machine setups and fixture placements to ensure accurate registration and repeatability.
- Prepare and convert vector artwork, fonts and logos using CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, or equivalent design tools; create cutting paths, apply kerning/spacing corrections and export optimized files for CAM or G-code generation.
- Develop, edit and validate CNC programs and G-code for engraving sequences; select appropriate tooling, spindle speeds, feed rates and passes to meet material-specific surface finish and tolerance requirements.
- Execute surface preparation and post-engraving finishing processes such as masking, sandblasting, polishing, chemical etching, anodizing, inlaying, lacquering or bead blasting to achieve specified visual and tactile outcomes.
- Inspect engraved parts using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers), optical comparators/magnifiers and visual standards; document dimensional results and surface quality to ensure compliance with customer tolerances and internal quality criteria.
- Maintain and calibrate engraving tools, laser optics, focusing systems, rotary chucks, jigs and fixtures; perform routine preventive maintenance and record service activities to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
- Troubleshoot machine performance, engraving artifacts, software compatibility and material interaction issues; implement root-cause fixes for repeatability, clarity and throughput improvements.
- Manage scheduling and job prioritization in coordination with production planners, sales and fulfillment teams to meet delivery deadlines and optimize shop capacity.
- Communicate directly with customers and internal sales representatives to review proofs, confirm styles, fonts and layouts, provide material recommendations, and obtain approvals prior to production.
- Document job set-ups, tooling lists, fixture configurations and machine parameters in job logs or the shop’s ERP/MRP system to support reproducibility and knowledge sharing.
- Prepare workpieces including cutting, clamping and fixturing; ensure correct orientation of text/logos and apply protective masking to prevent damage during secondary processes.
- Maintain and update a library of commonly used fonts, vector assets, stamping patterns and macro programs to accelerate common personalization workflows.
- Select proper consumables — engraving bits, masks, adhesives, lubricants and blasting media — and keep inventory levels updated; place orders or requisitions as needed to avoid production delays.
- Implement and enforce laser safety protocols, PPE usage and ventilation/fume-extraction requirements; train team members on safe material handling and hazardous-material precautions for coatings, metals and composites.
- Conduct trial runs and sample proofs for new product types, materials or complex artwork; measure results and recommend material/tooling/process changes before full production release.
- Collaborate with engineering, product and design teams to advise on engravability, material limitations, marking permanence and potential cost-saving design changes.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, 5S, Kaizen) to reduce cycle time, scrap, and rework while improving print readability, throughput and first-pass yield.
- Ensure compliance with applicable quality standards and documentation procedures (ISO, customer-specific QMS requirements) and support internal/external audits as necessary.
- Train, mentor and cross-train junior inscribers and production staff on machine operation, artwork prep, quality standards and safety procedures to build bench strength in the shop.
- Estimate job time and material costs for quotes and work orders; provide accurate lead-time commitments to production planners and sales for scheduling and customer expectations.
- Capture and report production metrics — throughput, scrap rate, downtime — and use data to propose process adjustments or capital equipment investments that improve shop performance.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap.
- Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.
- Assist with packaging, labeling and final inspection for shipped items to ensure traceability and correct customer fulfillment.
- Support marketing and e-commerce teams by producing product sample photos, demonstration engravings and content to illustrate customization capabilities.
- Help evaluate and test new engraving technologies (fiber lasers, CO2 lasers, ultrashort pulse systems) and recommend adoption strategies.
