Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design and implement breeding programs and selection protocols to maintain genetic diversity, desired phenotypes and production stability across laboratory and production colonies.
- Maintain, monitor and expand multiple insect colonies (eggs, larvae/nymphs, pupae and adults) using species-specific husbandry techniques, feeding regimes and environmental controls to meet weekly and monthly production targets.
- Develop and follow detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all rearing operations, including feeding, mating, egg collection, incubation, pupal sorting and adult emergence to ensure reproducibility and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct daily inspections of rearing racks, cages, trays and environmental chambers to identify and correct issues with humidity, temperature, light cycles and ventilation that affect survival, development time and fecundity.
- Accurately count, stage and document eggs/offspring, record developmental milestones and maintain production logs and electronic colony databases for traceability, metrics and audit readiness.
- Prepare and quality control artificial diets, media and other feed formulations, adjusting recipes and processing methods to optimize growth rates, survival and target trait expression.
- Implement and manage mass-rearing workflows and production schedules to scale output while safeguarding colony health, including staging operations, throughput balancing and bottleneck elimination.
- Screen and select breeding stock by phenotype and performance metrics (e.g., fecundity, mating success, development time, pathogen resistance) and execute controlled crosses to improve line performance.
- Apply sterile insect technique (SIT) or other sterilization protocols when required, coordinating irradiation or sterilization steps safely and validating sterility/fitness trade-offs in treated insects.
- Perform health surveillance, diagnostic sampling and necropsies as needed, coordinate microbial or parasitic screening with laboratory partners and take appropriate quarantine or remediation actions.
- Train, supervise and coach insectary technicians, interns and seasonal staff on safe handling, accurate record-keeping and protocol adherence to grow team capability and preserve colony integrity.

- Implement biosecurity and containment protocols, including access controls, decontamination procedures, insect-proofing measures and waste disposal plans to prevent escapes and cross-contamination.
- Participate in experimental design and data collection for strain improvement, performance trials or behavioral assays, linking breeding outcomes to measurable production KPIs.
- Maintain compliance with institutional animal care, permit and regulatory requirements (local, state and federal) and prepare documentation for inspections, approvals and grant reporting.
- Troubleshoot production problems using root-cause analysis, propose corrective actions (process, diet, environment or genetics) and verify effectiveness through follow-up monitoring.
- Lead or contribute to continuous improvement projects to increase survival, reduce costs per insect, shorten generation time or automate repetitive tasks while preserving quality standards.
- Collaborate with R&D, QA, regulatory, and supply chain teams to translate customer requirements and research findings into operational adjustments and breeding objectives.
- Ensure meticulous data entry into laboratory information management systems (LIMS), colony management software or spreadsheets, and produce regular production and health reports for leadership and stakeholders.
