Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop, implement and continually improve the company-wide inspection program, including inspection policies, procedures, acceptance criteria, sampling plans and inspection checklists to ensure consistent quality and regulatory compliance.
- Lead, mentor and manage a multi-discipline inspection team (field inspectors, shop inspectors, NDT technicians) including hiring, training plans, performance reviews, workforce scheduling and capacity planning to meet project and production demands.
- Define inspection scope and strategy for projects and production lots, coordinate inspection hold points, pre-inspection planning, and ensure timely execution to support on-time delivery.
- Manage field and factory acceptance testing (FAT), site inspections, pre-shipment inspections and final product verification; author and approve inspection reports and certificates of conformity.
- Establish and enforce calibration and test equipment programs; ensure measurement traceability by coordinating with calibration labs and maintaining calibration records for gauges, CMMs, NDT instruments and test rigs.
- Oversee non-destructive testing (NDT) activities (UT, MT, PT, RT, ET) including certification tracking for technicians, procedure approval, and interpretation of results in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
- Lead root cause analysis (5 Whys, Ishikawa) and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes for critical defects; drive cross-functional corrective actions and verify effectiveness to reduce recurrence.
- Implement statistical process control (SPC) and data-driven inspection sampling to detect trends, reduce variability and support continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, FMEA).
- Coordinate supplier and vendor quality assurance activities including supplier audits, incoming inspection programs, quality agreements, and supplier corrective action requests (SCARs).
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards (ISO 9001, API, ASME, ANSI, OSHA, local building codes), prepare and support external audits and certifications.
- Develop and maintain detailed inspection documentation, including inspection plans, NCRs (non-conformance reports), deviation requests, inspection logs and electronic quality records in ERP/QMS systems (e.g., SAP QM, Oracle, IQS).
- Collaborate with engineering, production, procurement and project management to resolve quality issues, change controls (ECR/ECN) and risk mitigation strategies before release to customers.
- Drive continuous improvement projects that reduce inspection rework, scrap and quality costs by implementing process controls, poka-yoke, and defect-proofing measures.
- Create inspection metrics and KPIs (PPM, First Pass Yield, On-Time Inspection, Corrective Action Closure Rate) and present quality performance dashboards to senior leadership and customers.
- Manage inspection budgets, resource allocation and third-party inspection contracts to optimize cost and service levels without compromising quality.
- Conduct pre-construction and pre-production risk assessments and readiness reviews to validate inspection readiness and resource requirements.
- Supervise containment and quarantine processes for non-conforming parts, ensure proper disposition (rework, scrap, use-as-is) and coordinate customer notifications when required.
- Ensure robust safety and environmental compliance during inspection activities; promote safe work practices and integrate inspection work into site safety plans and permits.
- Lead training and competency programs for inspectors and technicians, maintain certification matrices, and ensure continuing education to meet evolving technical standards.
- Support contract negotiations with customers and vendors on inspection-related scope, acceptance criteria and contractual quality clauses.
- Facilitate root-cause driven quality improvements by partnering with R&D and manufacturing to adjust designs, processes or specifications based on inspection findings.
- Maintain and optimize inspection software and digital tools (mobile inspection apps, digital checklists, document control systems) to streamline inspection workflows.
- Liaise with customers and regulatory bodies during warranty claims, product recalls or technical inquiries and represent the company in technical meetings and dispute resolution.
