ManufacturingQuality AssurancePackagingWarehouse

🎯 Role Definition

The Inspector Packer is a frontline quality and production role responsible for inspecting, verifying, and preparing finished goods for shipment. This role combines hands-on packaging tasks with quality control responsibilities: performing visual and dimensional inspections, identifying and segregating non-conforming product, verifying labels and lot codes, and ensuring packaging integrity. The Inspector Packer enforces standard operating procedures (SOPs), contributes to continuous improvement initiatives, and communicates defects and process deviations to supervisors and quality teams. Strong attention to detail, adherence to safety and GMP/ISO standards, and the ability to work on a high-volume production line are essential.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough visual inspections of finished goods on the packaging line to identify defects such as tears, dents, misprints, contamination, incorrect fills, or packaging misalignment, documenting findings accurately and in real time.
  • Verify product counts, weights and dimensions against work orders and packing lists using scales, calipers and tape measures; reject and quarantine items that fall outside tolerance and log measurements per SOPs.
  • Inspect and confirm correct labeling, lot codes, expiration dates, barcodes and UPCs on every packaging run to ensure traceability and regulatory compliance, removing or segregating incorrect labels immediately.
  • Perform functional checks on packaging closures and seals (e.g., seals, heat seals, crimps, caps) to ensure hermetic integrity and leak-free shipment readiness.
  • Monitor in-line packaging operations for alignment, fill levels and machine-related defects; stop the line or escalate to maintenance when safety or quality risks are detected.
  • Separate and document non-conforming product following containment procedures, complete non-conformance reports, and coordinate disposition with quality supervisors to prevent shipping errors.
  • Execute sampling plans and take representative samples for laboratory analysis or further QA testing, labeling samples clearly with lot, date, and inspector information.
  • Maintain accurate batch, inspection and packing records (electronic or paper) for each shift, ensuring complete traceability for audits and customer inquiries.
  • Conduct routine checks of environmental and hygiene controls (clean room procedures, GMP checkpoints) to prevent contamination, especially in food, medical device or pharmaceutical packaging environments.
  • Operate packaging equipment at assigned workstations, including case packers, carton sealers, wrappers, labeling machines and hand tools, following lockout/tagout and safety procedures.
  • Calibrate and verify basic measuring equipment (scales, gauges, calipers) and report equipment discrepancies to maintenance or calibration teams per calibration schedules.
  • Confirm packaging materials (corrugate, shrink film, inserts, cartons) match specifications listed in BOMs and packaging instructions; report any material defects or mismatched stock.
  • Conduct first-piece inspections at the start of runs and after changeovers to verify machine setup, label registration, and package presentation meet specifications before full production resumes.
  • Participate in line changeovers—assist with removal of old materials, set up new cartons/labels/inserts, and complete changeover checklists to minimize downtime and ensure correct packaging.
  • Apply and verify tamper-evident seals, child-resistant closures, and secondary packaging requirements when applicable to meet product safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Inspect pallet patterns and stretch-wrap tension for palletized finished goods to ensure safe transit; verify correct number of units per pallet and accurate pallet labeling.
  • Support root cause investigations by collecting inspection data, photo evidence of defects, and by participating in corrective action discussions with QA and production teams.
  • Enforce workplace safety regulations, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper material handling, and safe lifting techniques; report near-misses and incidents immediately.
  • Train new packing and inspection staff on inspection criteria, SOPs, quality standards and acceptance/rejection processes to maintain consistent quality output.
  • Execute rework instructions for minor packaging defects under supervision, ensuring reworked product meets acceptance criteria and is fully documented.
  • Perform cycle counts and assist inventory team with reconciliation of finished goods and packaging supplies to reduce stock discrepancies and support on-time shipments.
  • Communicate with supervisors and cross-functional teams (production, maintenance, QA, logistics) to coordinate corrective actions, shift priorities, and urgent customer-requested inspections.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting process improvements to reduce defects, streamline inspections, and increase packaging line throughput.
  • Assist quality engineers during internal and external audits by preparing inspection documentation, samples, and providing on-floor demonstrations of inspection processes.
  • Maintain cleanliness of inspection and packaging areas, ensuring organization of tools, inspection aids and replacement supplies to meet 5S and GMP expectations.
  • Update and maintain inspection checklists, visual aids and job aids that document acceptance criteria for new product introductions or packaging changes.
  • Participate in cross-training to support other packaging stations, material handling tasks and basic maintenance to ensure operational flexibility.
  • Help investigate customer complaints by compiling inspection records, images and packaging samples for quality review and customer response.
  • Coordinate with procurement when packaging supplies are found out of specification and assist in validating substitute materials when necessary.
  • Contribute to packaging validation activities, test runs and pilot packaging builds for new SKUs, documenting fit, form and function outcomes.
  • Compile daily inspection metrics (defect rates, rejects, yield, downtime) and provide concise shift reports to supervisors to drive data-informed decisions.
  • Assist in implementing and monitoring safety and ergonomic improvements identified through observations and incident reviews.
