Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and supervise installation crews on multiple sites, assigning daily tasks, monitoring productivity, and ensuring each installation adheres to project plans and manufacturer specifications.
  • Develop and maintain installation schedules and resource plans, coordinating with project managers, dispatch, procurement, and subcontractors to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Conduct pre-installation site surveys and risk assessments to identify potential conflicts, access requirements, permit needs, and special equipment or lift planning.
  • Enforce and demonstrate strict adherence to OSHA, local codes, company safety policies, and industry best practices; perform daily tool-box talks and safety briefings.
  • Verify and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals to ensure installations match engineering and design intent.
  • Oversee material staging, inventory control, and onsite logistics—verify incoming shipments, manage stock levels, and coordinate returns to meet project timelines.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and commission systems (electrical, HVAC, solar arrays, telecom equipment, audio/visual, or custom builds) to achieve performance and quality targets.
  • Conduct quality assurance inspections throughout installation phases and perform final acceptance walk-downs with internal stakeholders and customers.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate technicians and apprentices; provide constructive feedback, performance reviews, and development plans to build a high-performing team.
  • Manage subcontractor selection, scope, daily oversight and ensure subcontracted work meets contractual and technical standards.
  • Serve as the primary onsite escalation point for technical issues, customer queries, and schedule changes—document decisions and communicate outcomes to project leadership.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate daily reports, timesheets, jobsite photos, non-conformance reports, and as-built documentation in company systems.
  • Implement corrective actions for installation errors and quality deficiencies, leading root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Control and forecast labor hours and tooling needs for assigned projects, working with project managers to adjust staffing and resources for fluctuating workloads.
  • Coordinate permits, inspections, utility company interactions, and municipal approvals required to complete installations.
  • Ensure proper use, maintenance, and storage of tools, test equipment, and vehicles; enforce PPE usage and tool calibration schedules.
  • Manage customer expectations through proactive communication—provide status updates, escalation plans, and ensure positive onsite customer experience.
  • Monitor and control project costs related to labor, materials, and subcontractor spend, and highlight variances to project leadership.
  • Facilitate cross-functional coordination with engineering, design, commissioning, and service teams to ensure smooth project handoffs and ongoing support.
  • Implement standard work procedures and checklists to ensure repeatable, high-quality installation processes across teams and regions.
  • Lead emergency response for onsite incidents, conduct incident investigations, and implement preventive measures to mitigate recurrence.
  • Coordinate training and certification tracking (e.g., electrical licenses, forklift, confined space, NATE, NABCEP, competency training) to maintain compliance and technical capability.
  • Drive customer sign-off and turnover activities including as-built documentation, manuals, warranties, and commissioning records at project closeout.
  • Support sales and estimating teams with site-specific feedback, constructability reviews, and input on installation labor and duration estimates.
  • Lead pilot or new product installation rollouts, documenting installation procedures and creating job aids for field teams.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and update installation standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, and job aids to increase field efficiency and reduce rework.
  • Assist in procurement decisions by identifying preferred vendors, tracking lead times, and escalating long-lead items to avoid schedule slippage.
  • Support continuous improvement programs by collecting field metrics, analyzing productivity trends, and recommending process improvements.
  • Participate in weekly project review meetings and provide status reports, risk registers, and mitigation plans to project leadership.
  • Help manage warranty claim investigations by providing installation records, test results, and corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate technician training programs and onboarding for new hires, including hands-on coaching and compliance orientation.
  • Track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) such as installation cycle time, first-time pass rate, safety incidents, and customer satisfaction scores.
  • Aid in fleet and tool asset management by scheduling maintenance, coordinating repairs, and recommending replacements.
  • Provide support for staffing needs during peak seasons, including temporary labor sourcing and scheduling adjustments.
  • Maintain strong relationships with vendors and manufacturers for technical support, warranty exchanges, and product updates.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and installation manuals.
  • Hands-on installation and commissioning experience with relevant systems (electrical distribution, HVAC, solar PV, telecom, structured cabling, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of local building codes, NEC (National Electrical Code), OSHA regulations, and permitting processes.
  • Project scheduling and resource planning experience using tools such as MS Project, Smartsheet, or equivalent scheduling software.
  • Proficiency in job documentation and field reporting using mobile apps, ERP/CRM systems, or construction management software (e.g., Procore, Viewpoint, Fieldwire).
  • Experience with quality assurance processes, punch-list management, and final acceptance testing procedures.
  • Basic electrical troubleshooting and testing skills (multimeter, megohmmeter, clamp meter, commissioning tools).
  • Ability to estimate labor hours, track time, and manage cost controls for field operations.
  • Familiarity with lift equipment, rigging, and confined space entry procedures where relevant.
  • Competence in vendor and subcontractor management, scope verification and performance oversight.
  • Certifications and licenses relevant to the trade (e.g., electrician license, HVAC certification, NABCEP PV Installer, NATE) preferred.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED; vocational trade school or technical certificate strongly preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Renewable Energy, or related field.
