Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform precise calibration and adjustment of electrical test equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, insulation testers) following documented calibration procedures and manufacturer specifications to ensure measurement accuracy and repeatability.
  • Calibrate temperature and thermal instrumentation including thermocouples, RTDs, dry-block calibrators and temperature chambers, recording results and calculating measurement uncertainty for each calibration.
  • Execute pressure and vacuum calibrations using deadweight testers, piston gauges and precision pressure controllers; document traceability and certificate results according to laboratory quality system requirements.
  • Calibrate torque, force and dimensional instruments (torque wrenches, load cells, micrometers, calipers) using calibrated masters and reference standards while maintaining environmental controls to minimize measurement drift.
  • Use electrical and electronic calibration standards traceable to national labs (NIST or equivalent) and maintain calibration chains and uncertainty budgets for primary reference standards.
  • Prepare, review and issue formal calibration certificates and labels with required metadata (calibration date, due date, technician, measurement uncertainty, acceptance criteria) in the LIMS or calibration management system.
  • Troubleshoot and repair failed or out-of-tolerance instruments, replace components, perform functional testing post-repair, and update historical maintenance logs to support root-cause analysis.
  • Execute on-site calibration and field service visits for customers or internal production areas, set up mobile lab equipment, and maintain professional customer communication and documentation while on location.
  • Maintain and recommend purchase or retirement of working standards and test equipment based on calibration data, uncertainty analysis and cost-of-ownership considerations.
  • Conduct periodic verification and interim checks for critical plant instruments to minimize downtime and ensure process control stability between scheduled full calibrations.
  • Participate in ISO/IEC 17025 and/or ISO 9001 internal and external audits by preparing required records, demonstrating calibration procedures, and implementing corrective actions for nonconformities.
  • Develop, validate and revise calibration procedures, work instructions and standard operating procedures to improve throughput, reduce uncertainty and ensure compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Calculate and document measurement uncertainty, contribute to the laboratory’s uncertainty budget, and apply statistical methods (e.g., Gage R&R, ANOVA) to characterize measurement systems.
  • Maintain calibration schedule and due-date tracking in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or Calibration Management Software (e.g., Beamex, Fluke MET/Cal, GAMP/LIMS), prioritize workload and escalate critical items.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production and quality teams to define calibration intervals, acceptance criteria and in-use verification plans for critical process instruments.
  • Train and mentor junior calibrators and technicians on calibration techniques, safety procedures, use of standards and proper documentation practices to ensure team competency and consistency.
  • Follow laboratory safety protocols and environmental controls for humidity, temperature and electrical isolation while handling hazardous samples, high-voltage equipment or pressurized systems.
  • Record and report calibration trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) to identify drift, aging instruments, and opportunities for predictive maintenance.
  • Handle nonconforming equipment and perform root cause investigations with corrective/preventive actions (CAPA), documenting findings and communicating impact to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with procurement and inventory teams to manage calibration standards, spares and consumables; ensure proper storage, labeling and security of reference standards.
  • Support qualification and validation activities for new instruments, test benches and measurement setups, including protocol execution, acceptance testing and documentation.
  • Provide technical support and advisory services to customers and internal stakeholders on instrument selection, measurement uncertainty, traceability and best practices for in-situ measurement reliability.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, lean calibration workflows and defect reduction projects that improve lab throughput and reduce turnaround time.
  • Support the migration and configuration of calibration data into new LIMS/CMMS platforms and validate data integrity after system changes.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to implement cost-saving measures such as consolidation of standards, outsourcing decisions, and scheduling optimization.
  • Provide input to health & safety reviews related to lab layout, electrical safety and handling of pressurized systems.
  • Support inventory audits, tagging programs and barcoding initiatives to improve asset tracking and compliance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven ability to perform calibration across multiple domains: electrical, temperature, pressure, torque and dimensional metrology.
  • Strong working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory requirements and calibration quality systems.
  • Experience calculating measurement uncertainty and maintaining uncertainty budgets for reference and working standards.
  • Hands-on proficiency with calibration instruments and standards: multimeters, oscilloscopes, precision voltage/current sources, deadweight testers, piston gauges, dry-block calibrators, temperature baths, torque testers, and micrometers.
  • Skilled in using calibration management systems (LIMS, Beamex, Fluke MET/Cal, SAP PM or equivalent) for scheduling, record-keeping and certificate generation.
  • Competent with electrical troubleshooting, soldering, component-level repair and functional verification of measurement devices.
  • Ability to perform on-site mobile calibrations and manage logistics for field service operations.
  • Familiarity with statistical tools for measurement system analysis (Gage R&R, control charts, ANOVA) and basic data analysis in Excel or statistical software.
  • Knowledge of national metrology traceability (NIST or equivalent) and accreditation processes.
  • Experience preparing documentation for audits, nonconformance reports, calibration procedures and technical work instructions.
  • Proficient in reading engineering drawings, schematics and manufacturer service manuals.
  • Basic programming or automation skills (LabVIEW, Python, or similar) for automating test sequences and data collection are a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with technical certificates in calibration, electronics, instrumentation, or metrology; OR an associate degree in a relevant technical field.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Technology, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metrology, Physics or a closely related field.
  • Certifications such as Certified Calibration Technician (CCT), ASQ certified, or vendor-specific calibration certifications (Fluke, Beamex) are advantageous.

Experience Requirements

Preferred: 5+ years of progressive experience in an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory or industrial calibration environment, experience with on-site field calibration, proven troubleshooting and repair background, and a demonstrable track record producing calibration certificates and uncertainty analyses.
