Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct systematic inspections and functional testing of process and laboratory instruments (pressure transmitters, thermocouples, RTDs, flow meters, level sensors, gas detectors, analytical instruments) to verify performance against engineering specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Perform on-site and bench calibrations using traceable standards and certified reference equipment, documenting measurement uncertainty and calibration adjustments in accordance with company calibration procedures and ISO/IEC 17025 principles.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, I/O lists, loop diagrams and instrument data sheets to verify correct instrument installation, configuration, and tagging across plant and laboratory systems.
  • Troubleshoot instrument failures by performing electrical and pneumatic diagnostics, signal tracing, loop checks, and isolation tests, then recommend corrective action or repair strategies to maintenance teams and engineers.
  • Maintain and update calibration records, certificates, labels and calibration databases (CMMS, SAP, Maximo or Calibration Management Software) ensuring audit-ready traceability, change history and retention according to company policy.
  • Verify proper wiring, terminal connections, shielding and grounding of sensors and transmitters to prevent signal integrity issues and electromagnetic interference that could affect process control and safety systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks for transmitters, controllers, regulators, and analytical instruments, including cleaning, filter changes, zero/span checks, and firmware updates per OEM recommendations.
  • Execute loop checks, valve stroking, and final instrument verification during new equipment installation, changeovers, or commissioning activities to ensure integrated system performance.
  • Collect and analyze calibration and inspection data to identify drift trends and aging components; escalate instruments that consistently fall out of tolerance for replacement or re-design.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, non-conformance records and corrective action requests (CARs) with photographic evidence, measured values, tolerances and recommended follow-up actions for stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with procurement and suppliers to return failed instruments, obtain repair quotes, source replacement parts and verify vendor calibration certificates upon return.
  • Support safety-critical instrument programs (SIS/ESD, gas detection, pressure relief) by performing high-integrity inspections and ensuring devices meet regulatory and corporate safety management requirements.
  • Ensure all inspection and calibration activities comply with applicable regulatory standards and client specifications (ISO, ASME, API, FDA, GxP) and participate in internal and external audits as the subject-matter expert.
  • Apply leak checks, pressure tests and containment verification for sealed instrumentation and fittings, documenting results and repairing or flagging components that compromise system integrity.
  • Validate sensor performance in-process by correlating instrument readings with independent reference standards or redundant measurement channels to confirm accuracy under operational conditions.
  • Configure and verify instrument transmitters, HART/Fieldbus devices and smart sensors using appropriate communicators and software tools; document tag settings, ranges and device statuses.
  • Train and mentor junior inspectors, maintenance technicians and operations personnel on inspection techniques, calibration fundamentals, safe handling of test equipment and proper recordkeeping practices.
  • Manage and maintain test and calibration equipment inventory, including scheduling calibrations for test tools, verifying calibration labels and ensuring traceability to national standards.
  • Participate in failure investigations and root cause analysis (5-Why, Fishbone) for recurring instrument problems and help implement permanent corrective actions including design or process changes.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying inefficiencies in inspection workflows, reducing instrument downtime, optimizing calibration intervals and implementing best practices for instrument reliability.
  • Support shutdowns, turnarounds and projects by planning inspection scopes, estimating labor and tool needs, coordinating with contractors and ensuring timely completion of instrument testing and re-certification.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in developing and updating inspection and calibration procedures, checklists and SOPs to reflect best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance planning, risk assessments and pre-shutdown readiness reviews to align inspection activities with plant work scopes.
  • Help maintain compliance with corporate safety and environmental programs by following lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work and PPE requirements during instrument work.
  • Provide subject matter input to engineering on instrument selection, specification updates, and tolerance allocation during design reviews and change control.
  • Support procurement and receiving by inspecting incoming instruments for damage, verifying supplier documentation and confirming correct model/configuration prior to installation.
  • Create and deliver training modules and competency assessments to ensure inspection staff meet required technical skill levels and certification requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations to schedule instrument verification without impacting critical production cycles, documenting any operational deviations required for testing.
  • Provide measurement data and technical summaries for regulatory submissions, customer inspections and internal quality reviews.
  • Participate in vendor audits to assess calibration laboratory practices and supplier quality systems when outsourced calibration or repair services are used.
  • Maintain accurate parts and calibration supplies inventory, flagging obsolete or single-source items and recommending alternatives to reduce lead times and supply risk.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in instrument calibration techniques for pressure, temperature, flow, level and analytical instruments, including zero/span, two-point and multi-point calibrations.
  • Skilled at using and maintaining calibrated test equipment: multimeters, loop calibrators, pressure and vacuum pumps, deadweight testers, thermometers, standard baths, and flow calibrators.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, wiring schematics, loop diagrams, instrument data sheets and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, Modbus and other industrial communication protocols and the use of communicators/configuration tools.
  • Experience with calibration and inspection software, CMMS systems (e.g., SAP, IBM Maximo), and maintaining electronic calibration records and certificates.
  • Knowledge of electrical fundamentals, signal conditioning, grounding/shielding practices, and safe handling of low-voltage and intrinsically safe instrumentation.
  • Practical understanding of regulatory standards and quality systems: ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025, ASME, API, FDA/GxP as applicable to instrument calibration and inspection.
  • Competence with non-destructive testing (visual inspection, leak detection, basic PT/UT awareness) as it relates to instrument assemblies and fittings.
  • Ability to perform loop checks, valve actuation verification, and integration tests during commissioning and post-maintenance checks.
  • Skilled in basic mechanical skills for instrument removal, reinstallation, flange/gland packing checks and simple field repairs.
  • Experience assessing measurement uncertainty, calibration tolerances and determining appropriate calibration intervals based on risk and historical performance.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Excel, Word and reporting tools to analyze inspection datasets, generate trend charts and summarize findings.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School diploma or GED with relevant technical certifications (Calibration Technician, Instrumentation Certificate) or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation & Control, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical field.
  • Preferred certifications: Calibration Technician certification, ISO/IEC 17025 training, HART communicator certification, NDT Level I or II (if applicable), OSHA safety training.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience inspecting and calibrating process and analytical instruments, with demonstrated experience in calibration management systems, regulatory audits and commissioning activities.
  • Experience in regulated industries (e.g., oil & gas, chemical, power generation, pharmaceutical) and familiarity with industry-specific standards and client specifications is highly desirable.
