Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate process instrumentation and control systems (pressure, temperature, level, flow, pH, conductivity, gas detection, mass flow) to maintain process conditions within established setpoints and specifications.
- Monitor PLC and SCADA displays continuously, respond to alarms, analyze trends and take corrective actions to stabilize process variables while documenting all actions in shift logs and electronic event systems.
- Perform routine and scheduled calibration of field instruments (pressure transmitters, temperature sensors, flow meters, level probes, analyzers) using calibration standards and portable loop calibrators to ensure measurement accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Troubleshoot and isolate instrument and control system faults using diagnostic tools (multimeter, HART communicator, loop calibrator) and systematic troubleshooting techniques; coordinate repairs with maintenance and vendors.
- Execute safe start-up, shutdown and changeover procedures for production lines and process units, including pre-start checks, instrument verifications and coordination with operations and maintenance teams.
- Conduct field checks and preventive maintenance on pneumatic and electronic control valves, positioners and actuators, including adjustment, leak testing and replacement of worn components.
- Install, align, and commission new transmitters, analyzers, sensors and control devices according to engineering drawings, manufacturer specifications and company installation standards.
- Perform analytical sampling, operate on-line process analyzers (gas chromatographs, spectrophotometers, TOC, conductivity meters), validate analyzer performance and coordinate lab confirmation tests when required.
- Maintain accurate and auditable calibration records, instrument logbooks, maintenance work orders and certificate documentation in computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Interpret P&IDs, loop drawings, wiring diagrams and instrumentation specifications to verify correct loop configuration, signal paths and tag numbering during troubleshooting and commissioning activities.
- Implement and follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry and hot work permit processes when performing instrument maintenance, ensuring compliance with OSHA, local regulations and site HSE rules.
- Participate in reliability-centered maintenance and predictive maintenance programs by collecting instrument performance data, trending instrument drift and recommending spares and upgrades.
- Adjust and fine-tune PID controllers and control loop parameters under the guidance of process control engineers to optimize stability, minimize oscillations and improve product quality and yield.
- Support process improvement initiatives and root cause investigations by providing instrument data, event timelines, and technical input during incident investigations and CAPA (corrective and preventive actions).
- Maintain inventory of common instrument spare parts and calibration standards; initiate procurement requisitions for specialized spares to minimize downtime.
- Provide shift-to-shift handovers with clear documentation of outstanding instrument issues, ongoing maintenance work and operational anomalies to ensure continuity and safe operations.
- Coordinate with vendors and external contractors for advanced instrument repairs, calibrations and field service support while ensuring site access, permits and quality control.
- Conduct routine safety and operational checks of gas detection systems, flame detectors and emergency shutdown instrumentation; escalate faults immediately to supervision.
- Ensure process instrument installations and modifications meet ATEX/IECEx, SIL, IP/ NEMA and other applicable specifications for hazardous area classifications where required.
- Participate in training and mentoring of junior operators and technicians on instrument operation, safe work practices, calibration procedures and use of diagnostic tools.
- Perform on-call and emergency response duties for instrumentation-related incidents, including night/weekend support as required to restore critical instrumentation and process control functionality.
- Collaborate with quality assurance to ensure instrument performance meets product testing and regulatory requirements (e.g., cGMP, FDA, ISO), supporting audits and inspections with records and explanations.
- Execute leak detection and pressure test procedures for instrument air systems and pneumatic lines, documenting results and arranging corrective maintenance as needed.
- Maintain cleanliness, organization and labeling of instrumentation panels, junction boxes and cable runs to support quick identification and reduce human error during maintenance.
Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Hands-on calibration of transmitters, analyzers and sensors (pressure, temperature, flow, level, pH, conductivity) using loop calibrators and certified standards.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting P&IDs, instrument loop diagrams, wiring schematics and process control documentation.
