Typical work includes surface cleaning and preparation, masking and masking removal, paint mixing and color matching, spray application (HVLP, electrostatic, airless), touch-up, curing, and final inspection. The Instrument Painter works from blueprints, work orders and standard operating procedures and is accountable for safety, documentation and on-time delivery in a manufacturing, aerospace, electronics, or precision-instrumentation environment.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare instrument surfaces for coating by interpreting engineering drawings and job orders, performing thorough inspection, and planning the sequence of operations to ensure adherence to specifications and finish standards.
  • Perform surface cleaning and degreasing using approved solvents and aqueous cleaners, remove contamination, and document compliance with MSDS and hazardous material handling procedures.
  • Execute mechanical surface preparation techniques including sanding, abrasive blasting, chemical etching and hand finishing to achieve required surface profile and adhesion for primers and topcoats.
  • Mask and protect sensitive areas, connectors, labels and optical features using tape, plugs and custom fixtures to prevent overspray and maintain component functionality.
  • Mix, thin and prepare primers, sealers, topcoats and specialty finishes using manufacturer specifications, color formulas and digital tinting systems to achieve consistent color match and coating properties.
  • Apply coatings using spray equipment (HVLP, conventional, electrostatic, airless) following process control parameters — gun setup, nozzle selection, fan pattern, fluid pressure and distance — to meet film build and appearance requirements.
  • Operate and maintain paint booth equipment including filtration systems, downdraft/ crossflow booths, bake ovens and curing systems; monitor booth environmental controls (temperature, humidity, airflow) for process stability.
  • Apply powder coatings including pretreatment, masking, powder spray application and oven curing, and verify cure schedules with temperature monitoring and part sampling.
  • Conduct touch-up and hand-finishing operations using small spray guns, brushes and pens to repair chips, run-outs and assembly damage, ensuring visual and functional integrity with minimal rework.
  • Perform adhesion, dry film thickness (DFT), gloss, color and hardness tests, document results, and escalate nonconforming conditions to Quality/Engineering for disposition.
  • Maintain traceability and process records: job cards, batch tickets, lot numbers, curing times and inspection stamps to support audits, traceability and regulatory compliance.
  • Interpret and comply with coating specifications, customer special process requirements, and regulatory standards (FAA, EASA, ISO 9001, NADCAP where applicable) and participate in internal/external audits.
  • Troubleshoot coating defects such as orange peel, runs, fish eyes, blushing, delamination and poor adhesion by investigating root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Calibrate and maintain spray equipment, gauges and testing tools; perform routine preventive maintenance and coordinate repairs with maintenance teams to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Materials teams to qualify new coatings, revise processes, optimize cure cycles, and ensure cost-effective application methods while maintaining quality.
  • Train and mentor apprentices, new hires and cross-functional staff on best practices for surface preparation, application techniques, safety and finishing standards.
  • Ensure strict adherence to PPE, respiratory protection programs, hazardous waste disposal, and facility safety rules; participate in safety meetings and support 5S/lean continuous improvement efforts.
  • Coordinate with assembly, electro-mechanical and inspection teams to sequence work and support on-time delivery for kits and assemblies, including quick-turn and prototype builds.
  • Use computerized color matching tools, spectrophotometers and reference standards to ensure consistency on production runs and variant part numbers.
  • Prepare finished instruments for shipment by performing final inspection, packing to specification, and completing shipping documentation to preserve quality during transit.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and properly store paints, solvents and consumables to meet environmental and housekeeping standards.

Secondary Functions

  • Support process improvement projects by collecting data on cycle times, first-pass yield and rework rates and proposing process adjustments backed by metrics.
  • Assist Quality and Engineering teams with sample preparation for root cause analysis and participate in multi-disciplinary problem solving (8D, PDCA).
  • Provide input to procurement for preferred coating suppliers, masking materials and consumables based on shop experience to optimize cost and performance.
  • Participate in cross-training across finishing, assembly and maintenance areas to provide operational coverage and flexibility during peak demand.
  • Support rapid prototype and R&D painting needs for product development teams, including small-batch specialty finishes and experimental coatings.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in surface preparation techniques: manual sanding, abrasive blasting, chemical prep and de-greasing procedures.
  • Spray application skills using HVLP, conventional, airless and electrostatic spray equipment with the ability to set and adjust gun parameters.
  • Experience with powder coating processes: powder selection, spray application, masking, and oven cure cycles.
  • Strong knowledge of coatings chemistry (primers, sealers, topcoats, specialty coatings), VOC regulations and material safety data sheets (MSDS/SDS).
  • Ability to mix and tint paints to match color formulas using digital or manual tinting systems and spectrophotometer support.
  • Competent in measuring and documenting dry film thickness (DFT), gloss, adhesion, hardness and other coating test methods.
  • Familiarity with environmental controls in booths/ovens, including temperature/humidity monitoring and its impact on finishes.
  • Experience reading and following engineering drawings, work instructions, paint specifications and customer special process documentation.
  • Competence with finishing tools and shop equipment: spray guns, pressure pots, sanders, blast cabinets, ovens, respirators and filtration systems.
  • Knowledge of quality systems and compliance standards such as ISO 9001, FAA/EASA repair station requirements and NADCAP fundamentals where applicable.
  • Strong record-keeping skills: batch tickets, lot tracking, job cards and electronic documentation systems or MES.
  • Basic troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills related to finish defects and process variability.
  • OSHA and PPE best practices, hazardous waste handling, and familiarity with respiratory protection and confined space awareness (if applicable).
  • Experience with 5S, continuous improvement, and lean manufacturing principles as they apply to paint operations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with relevant on-the-job experience in painting, refinishing or coating operations.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate in coatings technology, industrial finishing, aerospace painting, auto body refinishing, or equivalent vocational training.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3+ years working specifically on precision instruments, avionic housings, control panels or small mechanical assemblies with documented quality results.
  • Experience in regulated industries (aerospace, medical devices, defense) and familiarity with FAA/EASA, NADCAP or similar audit requirements.
  • Certifications such as Coatings Inspector (ACI/CCI), OSHA 10/30, or company-specific paint/respiratory qualifications are a plus.
