Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, document, and execute detailed test procedures and work instructions for functional, electrical, mechanical, and environmental testing of instruments and subassemblies, ensuring reproducibility and traceability of results.
  • Perform precision calibration and verification of measurement instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, LCR meters, power supplies, DAQ systems) to meet ISO 17025 and company calibration schedules; generate calibration certificates and maintain calibration logs.
  • Design, build, and maintain manual and automated test fixtures, harnesses, and rigs; program and maintain automation sequences in LabVIEW, NI TestStand, Python, or equivalent test frameworks to increase throughput and repeatability.
  • Execute acceptance tests, production verification tests (PVT), and final inspection test plans; log measurement data, analyze trends, and produce formal test reports for engineering sign-off and customer documentation (FAT/SAT support).
  • Troubleshoot failed units to component and subassembly level using root cause analysis techniques (fault isolation, signal tracing, oscilloscope analysis, bench diagnostics) and coordinate corrective actions with engineering and manufacturing.
  • Perform environmental testing (temperature, humidity, thermal cycling), vibration and shock tests, and burn-in procedures in environmental chambers and shakers; record and interpret test data against pass/fail criteria and reliability targets.
  • Maintain and operate safety-critical instrumentation and test equipment in accordance with IEC 61010, company safety protocols, and ESD control procedures; ensure all test benches comply with safety and grounding requirements.
  • Validate and maintain test coverage matrices, test case libraries, and test automation repositories; continuously refine test strategies to reduce false positives and increase defect detection efficiency.
  • Create, update, and maintain detailed test documentation including test plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), assembly and disassembly guides, and troubleshooting guides for manufacturing and service teams.
  • Integrate data acquisition systems with test stations (DAQ cards, NI hardware, PLCs) and configure signal conditioning, sensors, and transducers; ensure signal integrity and proper sampling to prevent measurement errors.
  • Perform electrical safety, insulation resistance, hipot, leakage current, and earth continuity testing as required; ensure compliance with relevant electrical safety standards and customer specifications.
  • Execute functional verification for firmware/software-controlled instruments, coordinate with firmware and software teams for test hooks, debug interfaces (JTAG, UART, SWD), and validate repair fixes on reworked units.
  • Support production ramp-up by establishing production test stations, transferring test know-how to manufacturing operators, and optimizing cycle times while maintaining product quality and yield.
  • Participate in failure analysis and cross-functional problem-solving sessions (5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams) and document corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent recurrence of defects.
  • Manage test equipment inventory, calibration scheduling, and vendor relationships for outsourced calibration or specialized testing; procure spare parts and consumables for test benches to minimize downtime.
  • Capture, aggregate, and analyze test data using Excel, SQL queries, Python, or MATLAB to provide actionable insights on yield, common failure modes, and test coverage gaps; present findings to engineering and leadership.
  • Execute customer-specific test procedures and reporting requirements for regulated industries (medical devices, aerospace, defense); prepare and support documentation for regulatory submission or audits.
  • Perform board-level and component-level testing including power-up verification, in-circuit tests (ICT), functional smoke tests, and signal integrity checks to isolate hardware defects quickly.
  • Perform solder rework, connector replacement, and mechanical adjustments on failed units where appropriate; document rework actions and verify functionality post-repair in accordance with rework policies.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives for test processes: reduce test cycle time, increase automation, improve first-pass yield, and lower per-unit test costs using lean and Six Sigma principles.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to junior test technicians and operators on test procedures, safety protocols, troubleshooting best practices, and use of instrumentation.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contract manufacturers to define incoming inspection and test criteria, resolve incoming nonconformances, and support supplier corrective action requests (SCARs).
  • Support software build validation, firmware regression testing, and integration testing for instruments with embedded systems; verify communications protocols (Ethernet, USB, RS-232/485, CAN) and compliance to interface specs.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication with cross-functional teams (R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement, and Supply Chain) to prioritize test activities and expedite resolution of test-discovered issues.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in establishing lab KPIs (test coverage, cycle time, MTTR, instrument uptime) and compile weekly/monthly performance dashboards for management.
  • Support continuous documentation updates for calibration intervals, test equipment life-cycle, and procurement forecasting.
  • Participate in design reviews and DFMEA sessions to provide testability input and recommend design changes that improve test coverage and manufacturability.
  • Help evaluate and qualify new test equipment vendors and technologies to expand test capabilities or reduce lab costs.
  • Provide on-call support for production test emergencies, including troubleshooting high-impact failures and enabling quick return-to-service of test stations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven experience with electronic and electromechanical test equipment: oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, spectrum/network analyzers, LCR meters, power supplies, signal generators, and environmental chambers.
  • Hands-on calibration experience and understanding of calibration certificates, uncertainty, and traceability to national standards (ISO 17025 familiarity).

  • Familiarity with quality systems and regulatory frameworks: ISO 9001, ISO 17025, FDA QSR (for medical), or AS9100 (for aerospace) where applicable.
  • Soldering, rework, and basic SMT/through-hole repair skills for small-scale troubleshooting and validation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.

Preferred Education:
