🎯 Role Definition

An Instrumentation Engineer designs, specifies, installs, verifies and troubleshoots field instrumentation and control systems that measure and regulate process variables such as flow, level, pressure and temperature. This role owns instrument selection, loop design, calibration, integration with PLC/DCS systems, FAT/SAT participation, commissioning support and lifecycle documentation. The Instrumentation Engineer collaborates with process, mechanical, electrical and controls teams, interfaces with vendors, and ensures instrumentation meets performance, safety (SIS/SIL) and regulatory requirements while optimizing uptime and maintainability.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop detailed instrument specifications, datasheets and bill of materials for field instruments (pressure, temperature, flow, level, analyzers) and associated signal conditioning, ensuring compatibility with project PLC/DCS architectures, communication protocols (HART, FOUNDATION fieldbus, Modbus) and 4-20 mA loops.
  • Prepare and review instrument P&IDs, loop diagrams, cable schedules and junction box wiring diagrams to verify tag numbering, signal routing, and integration with electrical and control system drawings.
  • Lead selection, sizing and specification of control valves, positioners and actuators including valve characteristic analysis, control valve sizing calculations and valve diagnostics criteria in coordination with process and mechanical engineering.
  • Author and maintain instrument installation standards, wiring standards, grounding and shielding practices, and inspection/test criteria to ensure robust signal integrity and long-term reliability in industrial environments.
  • Design and implement field wiring and termination schemes, including marshalling and I/O mapping for PLC and DCS systems, and verify I/O documentation against control system configuration and telecommunication requirements.
  • Perform loop checking, bench testing, calibration and signal verification of transmitters, sensors, analyzers and control elements during construction, pre-commissioning and commissioning phases to ensure measurement accuracy and functional performance.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for instrumentation panels, skid-mounted instrument packages and analyzer systems; produce comprehensive test protocols and acceptance reports.
  • Support commissioning and startup activities by troubleshooting instrumentation issues, tuning PID loop control parameters, resolving signal noise and grounding problems, and coordinating with operations to achieve stable process control.
  • Specify and commission analyzers, sampling systems, and custody transfer metering (flow meters, Coriolis, ultrasonic, turbine) including calibration plans, reference standards and uncertainty analysis.
  • Develop instrument calibration procedures, preventative maintenance schedules and calibration histories to maintain traceability and compliance with QA/QC and regulatory requirements (ISO, API, ASTM).
  • Evaluate and implement digital communication and asset management solutions (HART modem diagnostics, fieldbus diagnostics, FOUNDATION fieldbus configuration, EtherNet/IP) to enable proactive maintenance and device-level monitoring.
  • Conduct hazard and operability (HAZOP) follow-up actions related to instrumentation, implement safety instrumented systems (SIS) requirements, participate in SIL assessments and develop safety shutdown logic and testing plans.
  • Collaborate with procurement and vendor management teams to prepare RFQs, evaluate technical bids, perform vendor technical evaluations, manage submittal reviews and ensure delivered instruments meet specified performance and quality criteria.
  • Create instrument loop diagrams, I/O lists and control narratives required for control system programming, database builds and logic verification alongside PLC/DCS engineers and SCADA specialists.
  • Troubleshoot and root-cause instrumentation failures, degradation, and process upsets using data analysis, loop checking, oscilloscopes and diagnostic tools; recommend hardware replacements or configuration changes to improve reliability.
  • Lead instrument installation inspections and punch-list closure activities during construction, ensuring proper mechanical mounting, conduit routing, tag labeling, environmental enclosures, and adherence to vendor and project specifications.
  • Produce detailed commissioning documentation including pre-commissioning checklists, commissioning test procedures, functional test scripts, and handover reports for operations and maintenance teams.
  • Provide technical support and mentorship to field technicians, junior engineers and contractors on proper calibration techniques, instrument troubleshooting, wiring best practices and safety protocols.
  • Implement signal conditioning and isolation solutions to mitigate ground loops, EMI/RFI and transient issues; design transmitters and isolator placements to protect control system inputs.
  • Maintain and update instrument master documents, asset registers, and CMMS records; ensure all instrument configurations and calibration data are captured for lifecycle management.
  • Interface with cross-discipline teams (process, civil, electrical, mechanical, controls, HSE) to resolve design clashes, clarify requirements, and ensure successful integration of instrumentation with the overall plant design.
  • Develop and review instrument loop tuning strategies, PID setpoint management, cascade and feedforward schemes to optimize process stability, throughput and product quality.
  • Support continuous improvement and reliability projects by analyzing failure modes, implementing corrective actions, optimizing spares lists and contributing to failure mode effects analysis (FMEA).
  • Ensure compliance with industry codes and standards (ISA/IEC 61511, ISA/IEC 62443, NEC, NFPA) during instrument selection, installation and testing to meet safety and cybersecurity requirements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Instrument selection and specification (pressure, temperature, flow, level, gas/liquid analyzers) with strong knowledge of sensor technologies and measurement principles.
  • PLC/DCS I/O mapping, signal wiring, loop diagrams and control system integration (Siemens, Honeywell, ABB, Emerson DeltaV).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or equivalent engineering discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Control Systems, Instrumentation, Process Engineering or related field.
  • Certifications such as ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP), IEC 61511/SIL assessor training, or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are advantageous.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3 - 10+ years of instrumentation and controls experience in process industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, pharmaceuticals, mining, or water/wastewater.

Preferred: 5+ years with demonstrated experience in instrument specification, loop design, FAT/SAT, commissioning and hands-on calibration; prior work on DCS/PLC projects, SIS implementations, and multi-discipline project delivery.
