Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prospect, qualify, and cultivate new business through outbound calling, networking, referrals, digital lead follow-up, and community outreach to consistently grow a book of business and achieve monthly and annual sales targets.
  • Conduct thorough needs analyses with individuals, families, and businesses to assess exposures, financial objectives, and protection gaps; translate findings into tailored insurance recommendations and coverage plans.
  • Present, explain, and compare insurance policy options (life, health, auto, home, commercial property & casualty, liability, workers’ compensation) in clear, client-friendly language that outlines benefits, exclusions, pricing, and underwriting requirements.
  • Prepare, configure, and deliver accurate, client-specific quotes and proposals using carrier quoting tools, rating platforms, or agency management systems; follow-up proactively to close sales.
  • Complete and submit new business applications, endorsements, renewals, and policy changes in full compliance with carrier procedures and internal quality standards to ensure timely issuance and avoid underwriting delays.
  • Verify client identity, property values, exposures, loss histories and other application data; order and review required supplemental documents (inspections, photos, loss runs, medical information) to support underwriting decisions.
  • Collaborate with underwriters and carriers to negotiate terms, secure competitive pricing, obtain binders, and resolve underwriting questions or conditional requirements that impact the client.
  • Maintain and update accurate client records, policy files, and communication logs in the CRM/agency management system; document needs, preferences, and follow-up actions to support retention and cross-sell activity.
  • Provide proactive renewal management: review coverage prior to renewal, identify gaps or over-insurance, present optimized renewal options, and implement agreed changes to maximize retention.
  • Manage and advocate on behalf of clients during the claims process: explain claim procedures, coordinate with adjusters, provide documentation, and follow up to ensure timely and fair settlements.
  • Cross-sell and bundle complementary products (e.g., auto + home, life + disability) by uncovering client needs during reviews and leveraging product knowledge to increase client value and policy penetration.
  • Execute targeted sales campaigns and marketing initiatives (email, social, seminars, lead nurture sequences) and convert inbound leads generated by carriers, aggregators, or agency marketing programs.
  • Achieve and report against individual KPIs and revenue goals, including written premium, policies sold, persistency/retention, quote-to-bind ratio, and service SLA metrics.
  • Educate clients on risk mitigation, safety programs, and loss control recommendations that reduce frequency/severity of claims and help lower insurance costs.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with state insurance regulations, licensing requirements, anti-money laundering (AML) rules, privacy laws, and carrier-specific contractual obligations; complete required continuing education.
  • Conduct periodic account reviews with clients—annual or life-event triggered—to reassess coverage needs, recommend adjustments, and document conversations to maintain relevance and trust.
  • Coach and mentor junior agents or new hires on product basics, sales techniques, CRM use, and best practices for accurate application submission and client follow-up when applicable.
  • Work collaboratively with in-house teams (billing, customer service, claims, marketing, underwriting) to resolve client issues, implement policy changes, and escalate complex problems for timely resolution.
  • Prepare detailed proposals, policy summaries, and presentation materials for commercial prospects and complex personal lines accounts, including coverage comparisons, limits recommendations, and estimated premiums.
  • Monitor market and carrier appetite changes, new product offerings, and competitive pricing trends to recommend alternative carriers or coverage structures that better serve client needs.
  • Maintain active producer licenses and carrier appointments; complete product training, certification programs, and role-specific continuing education to remain current and compliant.

Secondary Functions

  • Support marketing initiatives by providing subject matter expertise for content (blogs, FAQs, webinar topics) and participating in local events to build brand presence.
  • Document and escalate systemic client or product issues to agency leadership and carriers to improve processes or reduce recurring friction points.
  • Assist in periodic audits of client files and policy documentation to ensure regulatory compliance and internal quality control.
  • Provide input to product development and carrier relationship teams about customer needs, common coverage gaps, and competitive product features.
  • Develop simple educational materials and one-page summaries to help customers understand common coverages, claim steps, and policy limitations.
  • Support back-office functions during peak periods (renewal pushes, audits, or claims surges) to maintain service levels and client satisfaction.
  • Participate in cross-functional project work such as CRM migrations, quoting tool rollouts, or knowledge base enhancements by providing on-the-ground user perspectives.
  • Help track and report key sales and service metrics for weekly/monthly leadership reviews and forecasting.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • State insurance producer licensing (required for P&C, Life & Health as applicable) and knowledge of continuing education requirements.
  • Strong product knowledge across personal lines (auto, home, renters), commercial lines (general liability, property, commercial auto, workers’ comp), and life & health insurance products.
  • Proficiency with agency management systems and CRM platforms (e.g., Applied Epic, Vertafore, Salesforce, TAM, Nexsure) for client records, quoting, and pipeline management.

  • Ability to prepare accurate premium calculations, endorsements, and policy change requests; demonstrate attention to numerical detail and billing reconciliation.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to create client-facing proposals and coverage comparison documents.
  • Basic commercial insurance account analysis skills — reviewing COIs, contracts, and certificates of insurance to identify contractual insurance obligations.
  • Data entry accuracy and time management to maintain service-level agreements and process high-volume transactions.
  • Familiarity with lead generation tools, marketing automation, and digital sales channels to convert inbound and nurture outbound prospects.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; evidence of relevant licensing and industry training (state producer license required).

Preferred Education:
